Free Music Review: Another Janet Jackson Masterpiece

Many people who have reviewed this album say it's Janet's best record of her career. This is simply not true. Far more superior records such as "Rhythm Nation: 1814" and "The Velvet Rope" run circles around 1993's "janet." While still a great album, janet. doesn't quite have the provocative reaction and emotive feelings that Rhythm Nation: 1814 and The Velvet Rope so proudly possess. Janet's powerful and heartfelt messages have always struck a chord with the listening public, and have always worked much better than those of her brother Michael's.
Despite this, janet. is Janet Jackson's biggest selling record of her career, shifting 17 million copies worldwide, possibly because of Janet's image change. With her first breakthrough, 1986's "Control," Janet was all wrapped up in black coats singing innocently about preserving her virginity with songs such as Let's Wait Awhile. With janet., however, things changed; the foxy lady traded in her clothes for, well, nothing and sported a more funky and sexy image - one that seemed to be more successful than Madonna's at the same time.
"Janet" opens with the massive US No.1 single "That's The Way Love Goes." Topping the chart for eight weeks back in 1993, the mid-tempo R'n'B ballad is one of true class and definitely one of Janet's career highlights. "You Want This" is a favourite amongst many listeners of this album, and contains a sample of "Love Child" by the Supremes. The beat is funky and the choruses are perky and upbeat - album highlight for sure. "If" showcases Janet's rockier side, reminiscent of Rhythm Nation's "Black Cat," while the amazing "This Time" pushes Janet's creative influence even further. She dabbles with opera on this amazing R'n'B/rock song that runs for almost seven incredible minutes. The spooky 'Ooooh' bit at the beginning adds to the atmosphere, while the amazing opera vocal arrangement by Kathleen Battle gives this song a stamp that is worth nothing less than 'classic'.
"Throb" is probably Janet's second most overtly sexually explicit song to date, behind the dull "Would You Mind" from 2001's "All For You." The song is the most simple on the album, lyrics wise - but the incredible dance beat funks it up to become one of the album highlights. "What'll I Do" sees Janet dabbling with folk/rock music that sounds surprisingly good in its 1960's style and very typical of something Tina would've recorded with Ike back in the day, while "Funky Big Band" makes for another excellent song with it's 1940's influenced (and very funky) beat.
"New Agenda" sees Janet's experimental magic wand casting its spell over hip-hop, as the song booms out its amazing rap by Chuck D on a song that tackles racism, while the rather bland "Because Of Love" offers nothing new in the Janet Jackson-ballad style song, except for the chirpy "shoop" that runs almost the entire length of the song. "Again" is one of Janet's finest ballads to date, and was a massive US No.1 for the superstar in late '93. The ballad is outstanding, and only "Come Back To Me" from Rhythm Nation stands in the way of it easily becoming my all-time favourite Janet ballad.
"Where Are You Now" is a brilliant ballad that encompasses perhaps every human emotion of depressing feelings of losing a loved one. The song has a very old feeling to it, which will make it all the more timeless in years to come. "The Body That Loves You" is another fantastic ballad which shows Janet getting all sexy again for her man. The lyrics are raunchy, but the chilled-out beat with its swirling/dreamy effects keeps things pinned down...and is all the more better for it. "Any Time, Any Place" is one of the sexiest songs on "Janet" and portrays Janet's deepest fantasies about her man - she doesn't care where they make out and who sees them, as long as they're with each other. The final song on the album is the rather boring "Whoops Now." The song was huge in Europe, but doesn't seem to fit in with the rest of the album because of its poppy sound.
OVERALL GRADE: 10/10
All in all, janet. is a brilliant album, but not quite as good as the epic and classic albums Rhythm Nation: 1814 and The Velvet Rope. The only factor that stops this album from being totally flawless is the presence of so many damn interludes! Upon looking at the back of this CD, you'll notice (except for Janet's open jeans, curves and bare midriff) a track listing of some 28 songs. I was thrilled, until I noticed that a staggering 13, yes 13, of these are less than one minute long! Interludes usually work well on Janet's album, but they simply do not on here. So all in all, janet. is an essential recording for all Ms. Jackson's fans, but beware - if you're searching for another poppy fun-filled record such as Control, this ain't the place to look.
