I like the selection of songs to an extent although I think a better title might have been "Mostly Folk Song of America" since it leaves out so many genres of American music. That said, I do think many of the musicians who were chosen to sing these songs did a wonderful job -- I especially liked "Young Ladies in Town" by Elizabeth Foster, "Peg & Awl" by Freedy Johnson, "John Brown's Body" by Marah, "Rosie the Riveter" by Suzy Bogguss, "The Great Atomic Power" by Elizabeth Cook and "Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning" by the Wrights.
But my biggest complaint about the album is that the only "minorities" represented here are women ("I Am Woman"), African-Americans ("Say It Loud [I'm Black and I'm Proud]" and "What's Going On") and Native Americans ("Lakota Dream Song" by Earl Bullhead and "Apache Tears" by Scott Kempner who isn't even Indian, never mind Apache). However, there aren't any Hispanic or Latino songs of any kind here. It reminds me of Ken Burns' recent series, The War, which had to be re-edited to include stories about Mexican-Americans because Burns neglected that whole segment of our population, you know, the one that's been here 500 years.
There are dozens of songs that would have been appropriate for this CD set besides the ones listed in the title of this review. The last 100 years are full of Hispanic and Latino songs that could have been used. What happened here, Janet Reno? And you're from Florida where there are thousands of Mexican-American and Cuban-American musicians.
