Free Music Review: Janis: Symbol Of Free Will

She was one of the foremost symbols of pulsating free will who checked out way too early. Though there's a few (ever so few) tracks that I could do without, this box set embodies Janis like no other release in her small catalog. It's intelligently compiled by respecting chronology and is packaged with a magnificent booklet. Moreover, the previously unissued tracks aren't just bait but a revelation as if it had been labelled Classified Information. Priceless demos include "What Good Can Drinkin' Do", "Trouble In Mind" and "Hesitation Blues" all capturing that vibe at the local coffeehouse. There's a superb late-night blues, "One Night Stand", cut with Paul Butterfield. Her best known raveup with Big Brother, "Piece Of My Heart", adds a mighty wallop to the picture. But you also find a goldmine of deep album material like the early Big Brother "Easy Rider" and the late Kozmic Blues Band of "One Good Man" and Full Tilt Boogie's "Get It While You Can". "Me and Bobby McGee" is essential both before and after revisionism intervened. She burns down the house live. Though the performance of "Ball and Chain" here is very good, her other Monterey version is get-down brilliant. All her asides live and in the studio are real insightful. This great singer forged an identity with the blues but she was also a natural in country. Spontaneity and humor were her special edge. A rare box worth the bucks it'll run ya.
