The folks at Columbia have been releasing the same Janis material across several different releases. So, for those who are wondering if they already own some of the Calgary show that makes up disc 2:
Tracks 1, 6, 8, 11 appear on the single-CD remaster of Pearl.
Tracks 1 and 8 also appear on disc 3 of the Janis box set.
Tracks 3, 8, 12, 13 appear on Janis In Concert.
I think Summertime is previously unreleased, and this second disc is worth it for that alone.

I didn't pick her for the greatest female vocalist. I had Chrissie Hyndes in front of Janis. And I guess as long as we're being candid, I don't buy into the 'angel cut down before her time.' All those guys and girls lived as long as they were supposed to and they left an indellible mark on our souls and our minds. Phil Lynott, Morrison. Jimi, Janis, Keith, you know the lived a 100 years in a lot less time. And we're so lucky to have known them.
This record, Pearl, springs on us the earthy force of one of our sisters who had determined she was going to give the world a treat: Her. And she did.

Free Music Review: Finally-LIVE Janis with Full Tilt Boogie

Columbia has done a great job on the second disc of this set. It is the closest we will get to hearing a performance of Janis with her legendary band. What is sad is that this material sat in the vaults for over thirty years. I wish that I had access to the record company vaults. I'm sure there are treasures waiting for release. Janice can get no better than on this stellar, iconic album. I have had it in all its forms throughout my life -- LP, cassette, and CD. It is one of my stand-bys for great driving music. Well, it's just wonderful. This album is a lovely big feast for any Janis Joplin fan. She left us much too soon! What a tragedy, mostly for her but also for what she might have offered to the world. Again, GREAT ALBUM.
