Free Music Review: He Steals... Hearts
Hit: 5 Stars

I was channel surfing a few years ago when I stumbled across Austin City Limits, featuring some unknown (to me) singing and playing the guitar. I was instantly hooked. Who is this Jason Mraz, I wondered? Never heard of him. How could I never have heard of someone this good?? I watched the rest of the show, spellbound, and went out and bought Mr A-Z immediately. I was just blown away: such clever, self-aware, intelligent lyrics! catchy melodies! a pure and beautiful voice! Everyone I played it for fell in love with it instantly.

Fast forward to today.

When I looked at the cover of "We Sing...", I thought, what kind of a title is that, "... We Steal Things?" Is that a message, like "Steal This Book?" I knew absolutely nothing about the CD or the songs on it. Surely it could not be as good as Mr A-Z? Then I listened to it. After the third song (Lucky), I was awed to realized that he was "stealing" patterns - of brilliant songs - and molding them into equally brilliant but fresh songs. The extremely (and deservedly) popular "I'm Yours" reminds me a little of Bob Marley's "One Love". Other songs on the CD also bring to mind music I have heard before, but I'm not quite sure what and where. The CD seems to distill the "special sauce" inherent in great songs into something that is both new and strangely familiar. Tributes and the like have been done before, but rarely as well as this.

To me, the best singer-songwriters are poets that set their words to music. Jason Mraz is most certainly a poet, a great singer, and a marvelous songwriter. His music has been called "radio-friendly pop" but it's much more than that - it's truly exceptional. I really, really hope that he receives the recognition that he deserves.

Free Music Review: Pretty Pop!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I first heard of Jason Mraz some five years ago when I heard his catchy Pop ditty "The remedy" which to borrow from the title of another hit of his featured very clever "Wordplay".

"We sing, we dance, we steal things" is his third studio album and his first I've owned. It reminds me of the catchy, well written Pop music of the Seventies, with a spare clean sound.

Lead-off single "I'm yours" is a nice folky guitar driven song with Ska influences and some skat singing. Opening cut "Make it mine" is a sunny upbeat song with a great horn section which just makes me feel good.

"Lucky" is another outstanding Beatles-esque guitar ballad and it is a duet with Colbie Caillat. Their voices harmonize so well together. The albums other duet features UK soulful crooner James Morrison; the spare acoustic "Details in the fabric" with lovely strings. Beautiful!

Other standouts are the upbeat and groovy "Butterfly", the lovely and groovy "Coyote" (with a nice children's backing choir and some operatic flourishes adding to the drama - my favourite), the soulful/jazzy ballad "Only human", the disco/funk-tinged "The dynamo of volition" (with a spitfire vocal delivery, it wouldn't sound out of place on a Jamiroquai CD), the Beatles/Elton John sounding piano ballad "If it kills me", and the tender soulful closing ballad "A beautiful mess".

This is such a catchy and classy CD. I would heartily recommend it to anyone who appreciates good music.

Free Music Review: Mraz is new to me......What a great talent
Hit: 5 Stars

Over the years my musical interests have changed. I once was a country fan, then metal & hardrock, but as I've gotten a little older I have started to gravitate toward more melodic music. I was listening to the radio and heard "I'm Yours" and was blown away. Being a guy with a romantic streak in me this song's hopeful, uplifting look at love really raises my spirits. The song also has just a great melody and catchyness to it that will rattle around in your head for hours.

That's the song that hooked me, but "Lucky" with Colbie Caillat was the one that reeled me in. Two great voices singing a great song, that will remind many people of their feelings for their lover/spouse. "If it Kills me" rounds out the trio of romantic songs.

"Butterfly", well, the title is nodoubt a reference to an anatomical female feature. So, as you can imagine this is very sentual song. Sentual not pornograhic in nature. "Butterfly" has a definite R&B/Funk flavor to it that makes you want to dance. I've seen people mention that his song in particular objectifies females but I think it is largely done in very good taste.

The rest of the CD is filled out with songs about divorce, lost love, over analysis, and being fallible.

Great CD overall, one of the best I heard in years.

Free Music Review: The best album ever by someone not named Richard Marks
Hit: 5 Stars

I love almond M & Ms which leads to the totally logical conclusion that I would love this piece of musical chocolate. I think we can all agree that Richard Marks put out most of the greatest music ever by a male solo artist, but this Jason Mraz cat is dropping some championship music that should easily get him past the sweet sixteen into the elite 8. His reggae groove on "I'm Yours" takes me back to the days where I ran the grill Chips Bucket of Food in downtown Syracuse. Times were laid back. I hear the song every five minutes so you'd think I would want to hit someone with a bat the next time I hear the song. Totally not true!! I want more. I like every other song on this better because I don't hear them every time I have to go to the bathroom. Mraz is a great singer songwriter and you can tell the Hasslehoff influence on his work. Each nugget on this thing is finely crafted like my chia pet. Look out because here I go! I'm getting excited just typing about this thing. It's as if I'm at the pet store and the girl comes up and asks if I want to take home the chinchilla. I say, "No way Coolay, I want pudding for six!!". I'm lighting up the opponent right now like Mraz lights up the cool songs chart.

Get this thing and average will leave you alone.

Free Music Review: Lovin' Mraz!
Hit: 5 Stars

I had no idea who this singer/artist was. I saw his album cover in Starbucks (and it's sorta eyecatching with the drawing and the title) and said, "Hm. Interesting." Promptly forgot about it. Then heard "I'm Yours" on the radio and said, "Hey, this is great! What a fun song! Who is this?" The announcer said "Jason Mraz". So I said okay, gotta buy it. I did. Now I can't stop listening to it. And do I love Colbie Calliat? YES! Does he happen to have a duet with her on this CD? YES! Do I like every song? NOOO. 3 or 4 of them I can't stand. But the good far outweighs the "bad". And it's not bad, just not my style of music. But overall, a delightful CD. There is this one song, I often fantasize he wrote just for me, is "A Beautiful Mess". That song touches me in every way. The profound words, the melody, the delicate nature. What a gift Jason is. Again, not every song is my style, but the majority? Outstanding. (In case you're curious, my favs in the order of "favorite-ness" are: tracks 5, 2, 12, 6, 3, 11, 4). I highly recommend buying this interesting and fun CD! And listen to the songs more than once before making judgements. Let them play all the way through. The nuances you find time after time is quite remarkable!
