Free Music Notes for Dear You
Free Music Review: It's back, and justice is done

Uh oh. I've written a few reviews in these parts, and as an amateur, I'm admittedly free of the need to be objective. Nonetheless, I try. Nonetheless, _Dear You_ is one of those albums that comes out of nowhere and says, "Hi there, you will love me and evangelize me and dare to advance the notion that this very fine band's having had a little bit of money for a change to make me sound the way I wanted to was not as bad a development as some of their early fans would have people believe."
And when this album talks, I have to recommend taking it seriously. _Dear You_ is a a cathartic, catchy, harrowing, completely unique experience. In a perfect world, "Fireman" alone would have made it go platinum, maybe with "Bad Scene, Everyone's Fault" or "Sluttering (May 4th)" to push it over the top (since "Accident Prone," fine as it is, is a bit unwieldy at six minutes long, and "Jet Black" is a downtempo wonder but not exactly easy FM listening).
Bottom line: _Dear You's_ lyrics are often funny and often wrenching and often both at once -- but rarely neither and even more rarely as dumb as all too much of what we hear on Clear Channel. Meanwhile, its melodic instincts are simply impeccible, and its guitars *will* kill your mamma if you let them anywhere close. Look no further for dark punk (or emo if you insist) the way it should be done. Someday, Juliana Theory or Jimmy Eat World or some other band whose name starts with J may equal it, but I'm not holding my breath.
What I mean to say is, it's good to see it back in print, and with bonus tracks even. Thanks, Blackball.
