Free Music Review: Not a classic but one of the best this year
Hit: 4 Stars

First off I was thinking on bypassing this cd after hearing "Blue Magic". Lucky I took the chance on this one, it's now classic but is much needed. Jay is the only east coast MC who can get airplay today. "Hello Brooklyn 2.0 is the track that even comes close to what you hear today. And it's a bad song but it sticks with you cause of the hook. The rest of the masterpiece is just soul by surprising help. I mean I never thought JD was good but "Falling" was hot. And knowing Diddy got a new Hitmen click doing some hot stuff really impressed me. I know the game won't follow Jay on this whole vibe but it's a fresh throwback sound. This is HIP HOP.

Free Music Review: Not What I Expected
Hit: 2 Stars

I must say I am disappointed with this album, not necessarily the lyrics but the performance on the album. The VHI live performance was full of energy, absolutely genius and entertaining. I thought the ablum would be the same, however, it seems somewhat boring and tired, even the back-up signers did not perform the same. Bottom line, I did not like the album performance. Therefore, if you saw his live performance and loved it, I recommend waiting for the live release. Its full of energy and contains the best songs anyway. I am going to purchase the live performance, just disappointed I spent money on the album itself.

Free Music Review: Best Jay-Z Every (lyrically)
Hit: 5 Stars

in my opinion i think this is jay-z's best work every lyrically. the beats are iffy at times and hello brooklyn, even though i like the song, doesn't fit the album. the concept was dope and his tie-ins to the movie we very creative. and that's all i'm gonna say.

Free Music Review: GREAT CD!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

As a HUGE Jay-Z fan, I had high expectations for this cd. Shawn Carter did not let me down, instead he surpassed everything I thought I wanted from this cd. I love it from beginning to end. It is one of the most cohesive cds I have heard in a while. My fave track changes just about everyday. Today I am in LOVE with "American Dreamin" and "Say Hello." Even if you were never a Jay-Z fan prior to this, American Gangster would def turn you into a fan quickly. It has been in constant rotation at my house and at work. I cannot get enough of it :)

Jay-Z - American Gangster (Roc-a-fella, 2007)

2006's Kingdom Come wasn't a bad album but in retrospect, it was a postretirement album that was about as celebrated as Big Daddy Kane's Veteranz Day. And with Hova waving his grown-man status around (how many kids wanna hear about a rapper claiming that 30's the new 20?), the streets were quick to diss. But instead of going back to his beach chair, Jay found inspiration from an early screening of the Denzel Washington flick, "American Gangster", related the Frank Lucas character to his life, and came up with this album also called American Gangster.

Lyrically, Hovito keeps it street with hardly a crossover song in sight. You can tell that he wanted to take it back to the old days where his lyrics were highly praised; even old '90s producers like Sean "Diddy" Combs, Jermaine Dupri and No I.D. turn in some tracks and they work well with his vibe. The only disappointment, though, comes in the two high-profile collaborations: Nas once again gets shorter mic time than his boss on "Success" and the most overexposed rapper of '07, Lil Wayne, shows up on the contrived "Hello Brooklyn 2.0". His verse is dope but it would have been more appropriate for Hov to share the mic with someone else from Brooklyn. But American Gangster should bring Jay-Z back from "old rapper" status to "rejuvenated rapper" status. -EJR
