Free Music Notes for Jazz for Kids: Sing Clap Wiggle & ShakeFree Music Review: The only fault of this album is that it isn't longer! Hit: 5 Stars
This is a marvelous collection of jazz songs with quirky lyrics that should tickle any child and their parent's funny bone. As soon as you hear Ella Fitzgerald jump into the hippest version of Old MacDonald you've ever heard, you realize this is no ordinary children's musical album. My personal favorite - and one that I have even heard my daughter's grandparents now singing - is "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens" with some of the greatest lyrics on the album. The Johnny Jumper in our household gets lots of wear and tear during that song. There is only one song - comprised mostly of chicken "bocking" that can be slightly annoying - but other than that the songs compiled here are real gems. Hearing them together like this, it's surprising that they weren't recorded as a children's album originally - they fit so well together. So, enjoy "Yes, We Have No Bananas" and "What a Wonderful World" with your child and be prepared to watch them show interest in other music by these jazz standards. It is a marvelous introduction to a staple genre. So good, in fact, that my only criticism is that it is over far too soon.
Free Music Review: Not at all what passes for children's music today! Hit: 5 Stars
Save yourself and your children from today's insipid "kiddie" music! This is a wonderful assortment of artists and songs for all to enjoy. Two cuts from Ella Fitzgerald recorded 20+ years apart give an indication of the change in her voice and style over the years; a surprisingly-mellow Louis Prima; Lionel Hampton on vibes in 'Ragg-Mopp'; Oscar Peterson on piano (on a cut that mysteriously fades out); and best of all, the CD ends with Louis Armstrong singing "Wonderful World" which will make you forget that it is often overplayed/overused and make you hug your kids (especially when you think he recorded it in 1967...a year when kids really needed hugging).
Unfortunately, the liner notes are non-existent--only songs, composer/lyricist credits and date of recoring. Introduce your children to the great American art form...you won't be pitching this CD out in a few years.
Free Music Review: Absolutely wonderful CD for kids - a must have Hit: 5 Stars
We own probably a dozen or so various children's music CDs, and this one rates right at the top. My three kids (5, 2, and 1) absolutely love it! They listen to it on their CD/Clock Radio as they get dressed for school every morning.
What I really appreciate is that it is conveying the Jazz form to the kids at an early age. All of the other music CDs that we have are either classical, traditional (e.g., Veggie Tales), or more "popular." The music on this CD introduces my kids to "swing" and the syncopated rhythms that are key to jazz. I love to hear them try to sing along and play their toy drums to the rhythm. It also introduces them to some of the jazz greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, and Louis Prima (well, sort of a Jazz great).
I believe this is a must-have for any child's music collection.
Free Music Review: Finally, a CD for kids Worth All FIVE Stars! Hit: 5 Stars
Totally dance-able and the songs are so fun to sing! Great intro to jazz.
My favorite song is "Oh yes we have no bananas" by Louie Prima (King Louie in the Jungle Book) and "Ain't nobody here but us chickens". My 2-year-old son loves Ella's "Old MacDonald" and "Muffin Man", our 1-year-old loves it all, and my husband, who is a professional musician leans towards "Mumbles". I dare you to listen to this and not smile from ear to ear the whole way through - impossible - so fun!!! Great CD!!!!
We are Dan Zanes fans and this is of the same caliber and just as classic - you don't get sick of it so fast - important for a kids CD. I listen to it without the kids and wish there was another one like this - guess I'll have to seek out some more kids jazz songs on my own!
Free Music Review: great music for the whole family. Hit: 5 Stars
This album meets my requirements for kids music--it needs to be something that not just the kids like, but that mommy likes too. Meaning, no sugary-sweet, bubble-gum-ish whiny or cheesy nonsense. It can be quirky or fun or pleasantly weird without being any of the aforementioned adjectives. This compilation is fun! All of the songs are songs that kids will enjoy singing because they are children's classics (eg. Old MacDonald, The Muffin Man). The bonus (especially for parents) is that all of the songs are jazz renditions done by some of the greatest jazz singers EVER--Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, and Carmen McRae, among others. It's a great way to expose your children to a wonderful genre of music for which they could develop a lifetime love.
