Free Music Review: A STUNNING DISPLAY OF EARLY JAZZ

This is a truly stunning compilation of great jazz classics by obscure bands (with the exception of those of Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver, and Bennie Moten) all of which deserve to be better-known. Two of the bands, namely Louis Dumaine's Jazzola Eight and Sam Morgan's Jazz Band, were recorded in New Orleans, and Morton, Oliver and Frankie Franko, had originated from that city. Other bands were based outside the main recording centres, and were captured on record only because recording companies carried out scouting expeditions. Sales of records by these so-called territory bands were confined to their particular entertainment areas, and thus their 78s are much prized today. Remastering is faultless, and the 16-page liner note carries a commentary on each record, and rare photographs. My only criticism is that a reissue of this quality should have included a thorough discography to show recording date, matrix and catalogue numbers, and personnel. But don't let that deter you from buying this gem, together with Volume 2.
