Free Music Review: Still takes me into another world
Hit: 5 Stars

I heard this album back in 1978 in its LP form, locally printed by Polydor. Since the first time it took me to another dimension, a world I can only imagine with my eyes closed. I really loved this album first sight (first heard?), but I had my concerns about the quality of the the sound of the LP pressing made by the local Polydor (well, I didn't like the quality of sound records printed by the local Polydor until 1985). I bought this record once and again from international sources, even in tape (cassette) and time after time I thought that the sound quality wasn't satisfactory for me...

Then, as a last chance, I bought in 2003 the new CD issue, Digitally Re-mastered 96 Khz - 24 bit technology issued by 2000 year... Just to hear this disk, I bought a totally new digital audio system... And then my ears heard the sound I expected to hear since I had 14 years old. This disk is one of my very favorites, together with Magnetic Fields, Equinoxe and Zoolook (in that order), although the rest of the Jarre work is exceptional too.

I am a music lover, specifically Rock oriented. But only Jean Michel Jarre and Tomita had moved my attention to electronic sound, and they're my favorites in this arena. Oxigene puts a milestone in my life, and I think that would be done with yours if you listen to it carefully, lights off, eyes closed, well tempered sound and putting your mind in white. The sound will draw enough images in your mind to blow you away. Definitely, one of my best choices in music.

Free Music Review: Jarre's Magnum Opus
Hit: 5 Stars

Frenchman Jean Michel Jarre is an early pioneer of Electronica just like Germans Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream also were, but Jarre's music is more accessable with dreamy vibes and meliodic themes and neither is it minimalistic nor too exprimental, it's simply an opera of Electro with beautiful arrangements. Released in 1977 "Oxygene" was an early electronica masterpiece that would not only be one of the bluprints for upcoming eletro music but would also be one of the finest, most meliodic and dreamy Electronica albums of all time. Talented composer Jarre creates a fantastic sound with his synthesizer(s) that still to this day is fascinating to listen to. Back then it was quite unusual that one artist singlehandedly could create such a colourful athmosphere using so few instruments but it almost feels like in space listening to Oxygene and although all of the 6 songs share the same name they are completely diffrent but tangled into a great concept. Oxygène Part IV was single released and huge hit the same year, in the video for the song you could see a penguin march from Antarctica. That song like all others are instrumental but for Jarre words are redundant and he'll capture you entirely with his sound instead and you'll discover new details after each listen. This album is only 40 minutes in lenght but if you have listened to the likes of Robert Miles, Air and BT, I'll be recommending you to check out Jean Michel Jarre aswell cause his music influenced them all.

Free Music Review: Oxygene ~ Jean Michel Jarre
Hit: 5 Stars

Oxygene~ Jean Michel Jarre is an increndible electronic music album and could be compared with Kraftwerks Autobahn in the sense that they legitimized the use keyboards in music creation and composition. Jarre shows his genius by himself playing all the instruments and it is like being allowed a glimpse into the early world of synht music. The soft sounds of the analogue synths of the 70's is so nice to hear and one wonders (sometimes aloud) which sounds come from which keyboard. Is it the A.R.P., the A.K.S. or some other early keyboard. I would in fact call this his magnum opus and his debut album is so much better in many aspects then his later work. Oxygene number 4 is the best of the lot and who can forget the music video that came with this tune and had a bunch of penguins in it and the antartic landscape. I can not say enough good things about the synth sounds and I verily feel like the synths of the 70's had a sound that can not be matched by synths even of today. This is also music that is electronic yet manages to speak to the common man something that some of his later recordings fail and become way to avant-garde and strange for instance the recording zoolook that only speaks to hardcore avant-garde fans and some of his later works that sound a bit cheesy like the track london kid.

Free Music Review: Jarre's Breakthrough
Hit: 5 Stars

This album was Jarre's breakthrough album. Who doesn't know the tune from Oxygene IV? Nowadays we forget how much effort was put into this album, without the aid of MIDI or computerized samples. Just listen to the wind and bird-sounds - all produced using the white and pink noise from synthesizers. Jarre is one of the pioneers of synth music, and this album definitely proves it.

The album is still a classic and although it is already 30 years old (2006 is the thirtiest anniversary!), it sounds like it was recorded yesterday. The music is a mix of rythmic elements and lush pads, string-like sounds, winds, and alien bleeps and blurps. But most of all, this album is all about melody - melodies you will be unable to forget once you have heard them.

If you like this album, you should definitely check out Oxygence 7-13. On that album, published a few years ago, Jarre revisits the sounds and synths used on the first Oxygene album, but with todays' technologies. You will find that even with the new technologies, the original Oxygene still stands firmly, and will remain so for decades to come.

Free Music Review: Reach for the stars
Hit: 5 Stars

Do not look unfavorably upon this peenemundic project. 1976 PONG came out (and how far has computer gaming evolved). Same holds true for electronica. 1976 OXYGENE was categorized under jazz (?). Now we know it as the Sputnik that changed the space and contour of a developing genre. Jarre's musical elements built upon set confirurations offering a whole new order of dimentionality. With this LP he expanded the ring of the horizon and allowed cosmic integration for a much greater spacial atmosphere. With futuristic energy and french melancholy he released composition from the conventions of naturalism. This progressive conviction to soar was expounded upon by numerous musicians to what we have today. A potpouri of electronic space/thinking music. The final oxygene track is the best arranged sculpted space you shall ever hear.
