I first heard all of the songs from GRACE in a smokey bar called Club Soda, in Montreal, where Jeff Buckley played for one night in 1994. Buckley possessed a sweet, other-worldly castrato voice on the high notes that could twirl, feather-like, down to the soothing, honeyed tones of a father crooning lullabies to his child. This was a voice that cured all ills, a redemptive voice trapped within the body of a man with an angelic face and a questing, untranquil soul. Buckley's songwriting on GRACE is somewhat uneven and not quite what it could have been, but tracks such as "So Real" and "Lover, You Should've Come Over" are as pure as the best eau-de-vie, and his rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" features erotic lyrics that Cohen himself has never sung on record. A fine, sweaty, sexy work of art of a CD. So long, Saint Jeff of the smokey bars; pray for us, and thank you for the songs.
