Free Music Notes for Live at Sin-E: Legacy Edition (Bonus Dvd)Free Music Review: Brilliant and gorgeous Hit: 5 Stars
Jeff's first album, Live at Sin-e, is for me an incredibly special, delicious treat, especially since I was unfamiliar with his music before his death. Personally, Live at Sin-e moves me more than Grace (although not more than the amazing song Forget Her, available only on the double re-issue of Grace). Although Live at Sin-e is mostly Jeff doing covers of other people's compositions, he made them completely his own. His selections (some surprising for a man to have done) were unique and wonderful, showcasing his willingness to let his vulnerability and delicate sensibilities not only show but soulfully shine through. The taste and artistry on this recording never fail to send me. Also, I find his comments and interactions with the audience on this both entertaining and telling. And, more than anything, I love the free spirit of this session. As a companion recording that's equally uninhibited, I highly recommend his father's (Tim Buckley's) fantastic jazzy/psychadelic session Live at the Troubadour, which features a trio totally immersed in long, groovy jams on some of Tim's songs.... IMHO, in this father and son were two brilliant creative voices that ironically were both taken from us far too soon. RIP.
Free Music Review: hear truly inspired humanity Hit: 5 Stars
Having never heard Jeff Buckley before and not really knowing much about him other than his strange death and supposed musical genius, I felt an intuitive affinity to check him out and figured a live album would give me a chance to see his real side and experience the truth of the performance. As I write this I am listening in awe. I've always thought the true sign of a great musician and/or music is when it is performed alone with a single instrument- for me a guitar or piano. In this you have Jeff alone with his telecaster in a coffeshop in NYC essentially letting it all hang out. I save 5 stars for truly great music- I'll admit it, I'm a music snob. But in this you see the seeds of a budding star, still reaching deep to find IT (which he does). You can hear and hold a great potential, some say lost, but I say captured on this highly inventive live performance. Hear where Jack White and Rufus Wainwright found his vibe and where grunge could have NEVER gone. The music is sweet and dreamy at times but also full of funk and soul as well. We need Jeff now- hear the future of rock and roll, a voice now sadly gone 6 years. If you need something new, deep, fun, crazy, honest and sincere- click away.
Free Music Review: Next to Grace, the most important Buckley CD to have.... Hit: 5 Stars
If I could give this 10 stars, I would. For the many of us worldwide who are still awestruck by Grace, this album is essential, because it displays Jeff's range of influences which clearly helped him develop his unparalleled style. For his own songs, "Lover..." and "Grace" are probably the highlights of the album. But there is so much more to it. His interpretations of "Strange Fruit," "The Twelfth of Never," and "Just Like a Woman" are jaw-dropping, and, dare I say, possibly better than the originals (apologies to Billie Holliday devotees). You have to hear it to understand. Zeppelin fans would be shocked at what he was able to do with "Night Flight," an otherwise forgettable track from Physical Graffiti. But the highlight for me is his rendition of Van Morrison's "The Way Young Lovers Do." It may be the greatest re-working of a classic song I've ever heard, as Buckley turned a sugary-sweet 3-minute song into a 10-minute masterpiece. Even after having owned Grace for 4 years, I had no idea how incredibly gifted Jeff Buckley was until I bought this album. For me, he stands alone, and I can only compare the enormity of his loss to the music world to the loss of Otis Redding in 1967.
Free Music Review: Some of the most beautiful music ever recorded... Hit: 5 Stars
As great as this recording is, I'm surprised at how look it took for Columbia and Mary Guibert [Jeff's mother] to release it. I'll probably be denounced as a heretic for saying this, but I think this is Buckley's greatest recording -- better than 'Grace', even. Now, before you drag me out into the street and crush my skull against the curb, have a listen. Recorded in the summer of 1993, prior to the release of 'Grace', the appeal of this recording goes beyond just die-hard Buckley fans; this is simply great music. His originals are great, even if some of them aren't as fine-tuned as they ended up being on 'Grace'. The true surprise of these discs are the covers. He reinterprets these songs so well that I find it hard to go back and listen to the originals. Not everybody can improve on Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, and Ray Charles, but Buckley comes the closest to meeting, if not exceeding, the expectations set forth by those visionaries. If you are a fan of great classic music, not just a Buckley devotee, pick this up. For us hardcore Jeff fans, though, this is truly one of the most heavenly recordings in the world.
Free Music Review: A Heartfelt Last Goodbye Hit: 5 Stars
Having purchased this album several months ago, i decided to wait to write a review. i wanted to let the emotional impact of this album sink in after several listens. If 'Grace' was one of the best albums of the last 20 years, then 'Live at Sin-e' is the best live album of the past 20 years. These recordings transport the listener to a time when music was simpler. You can't help but feel as though you were one of the hundreds trying to cram into this lower east side cafe to catch a glimpse of arguably the greatest singer/songwriter of our time. Buckley's haunting voice captivates the listener and sucks you into his world of heartbreak, love, and fun. He was a realist and loved to just play music; nothing more, nothing less...just play music. those who were fortunate enough to see him live got to experience a true musical genius. this album offers us who did not the closest feeling to that experience. There is one major negative to this album though, it is just a reminder that there will be no more heard from Jeff.
