Inspiring. Frightening. Colossal. Graceful. Glorious. Gargantuan - and that's just "Dream Brother", the opening number of this collection of awesome live material, as selected by Jeff's mother and former band mates.
In truth, you cannot describe an album as good as this - you have to listen to it and spend a lifetime letting it sink in. Had this breath taking collection included the version of "Lover You Should Have Come Over" featured on "Live a L'Olympia", then surely many would have been mortally wounded by the over-whelming power of its ecstacy. Jeff's version of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah", wrapping its naked legs around an incredibly emotional rendering of The Smiths classic "I Know its Over", will tear at the finest string of your gasping heart.
Some have said that Jeff Buckley was plucked from this world by God, but on listening to this album, I really don't think so; the competition would surely have proved too much.
This is an astounding body of work and don't let anyone try to convince you otherwise.
Free Music Review: Transcendant..... Hit: 5 Stars
Rife with anticipation, I ripped this cd from it's package and promptly listened to it 4 times in a row. Every moment is a sonic fruit to be savored...lush, full...trembling with beauty. Jeff Buckley was a masterful vocalist and gifted songwriter. This album, comprised mostly of songs from his '94 release Grace, gorgeously showcases Buckley's ethereal genius in this, the unfakable forum of live performance. A voice that moves through you like a thought...conjuring every emotion known. Mean, sexy, and powerful....at the same time being delicate and vulnerable , Jeff's vocalism is astonishing. I'm so grateful for the previously unreleased pieces. They add the proper facet to the otherwise perfect stone known as the music of Jeff Buckley. If you are a lover of music - especially of true singer/songwriters - you will want for nothing more than this album...except for more of his music. So let this amazing soul twist your heart. And thanks to his incredible mother and bandmates for giving us this gift.......JEFF BUCKLEY LIVES!
Free Music Review: Buckley....once again, forever Hit: 5 Stars
Jeff Buckely's is one of real triumph over death. The tragic loss of the young, soon-to-be- household name came at a time when the world was just discovering his music. This is a live album that is unusual in its feel because you can hear a pin drop while the album plays. The audience treats the songs with the reverence of prayer in a cathedral and Buckley's voice rises to the roof like some ancient spirit showing itself to remind us of its otherworldly power. The intense delivery of Big Star's "Kangaroo" and the haunting "Dream Brother" are poignant reminders of just how Buckley's voice was not so much a physical talent...it bordered on being a natural force. Again, Buckley's voice swells like a fearsome tide for "Grace" and settles for the beatific "Hallelujah". This is a live album that shouldn't be missed if you are a fan of Buckley...and certainly one you should catch if you are looking to get a feel for the magnetism and presence of a performer who left us too soon.
Free Music Review: Buckley live is life altering. Hit: 5 Stars
A collection of live performances from Buckley's 1995/96 tour of the same name, "Mystery White Boy" is a an electrifying, and at times, spine chilling rendering of Buckley originals along with covers of artists such as The Smiths and Alex Chilton. From the opening eastern jangle of Dream Brother, " Mystery White Boy" is a descent into a musical realm that will leave no sense untouched. Buckley's ethereal voice sends his audience into admired silence with the soulful "Mojo Pin" and unbridled frenzy through the seduction of "Last Goodbye". Similarly Buckley could bludgeon with brilliance ("I Woke up in a Strange Place") or captivate like an angel ("Hallelujah"), his unique musicianship creating a kind of portal in which one can find most any thing they want. If youv'e ever wanted an out of body experience lay in a darkened room with a single candle lit and listen to Buckley's rendition of "Kangaroo". Simply, words cannot explain. Thankyou.
Free Music Review: Essential Hit: 5 Stars
Jeff Buckley was an amazing performer and it is too bad he didn't live long enough to create for years and years and to enjoy his steadily growing fan base.
This CD shows what a talent Buckley really was in concert. His variations on his own songs and on standards are wonderful. Mystery White Boy could be equated to Andy Warhol's famous colorizations of the Marilyn Monroes. It is a different rendition of Grace with a few new songs included. The CD captures some of Buckley's softer moments. His introverted repetition of "It's you..." during Mojo Pin is serenely beautiful. His voice is perfection in the music even if the songs were meant to be sung by a woman like in "Lilac Wine" and "The Man That Got Away." His voice varies from song to song showing his immense capabilities from his use of a bitingly sarcastic voice in "Moodswing Whiskey" to a softer soothing one in "Hallelujah/I Know It's Over." The CD is fantastic and is a definite necessity for any Buckley fan.
