Free Music Review: Mystery White Boy
Hit: 4 Stars

When I heard that the Jeff Buckley Camp was going to release a live album I was so happy. The day it came out i skipped school so i could buy it. I must say it wasn't the best recorded live album Ive heard, but that hasn't kept me from leaving it in my cd player every day since I bought it May 9th. I always wondered why jeff started off with "dream brother" since it i didn't seem like a song you would open up with until i heard it live. It blew me away big time, with the building tension and ab-lived lyrics "Your not like them", it just makes it hipnotic and dreamy. A matter of fact those are the two words i would use to describe it "dreamy and hipnotic". Songs like "Grace", "Mojo Pin", "Eternal Life", and "Lilac Wine" are just so powerful and raw compared to the studio takes of them. Even the new songs "Woke up in a strange place","What will you say" and "Mood Swing Wiskey" are very good, and makes you wonder how they would of sounded on Buckleys never completed 2nd record. Specialy "Woke Up in a strange place", just a great rock n' grunge song. Even the cover of Big Stars "Kanga-roo" is almost like waking from a nightmare with blips of double time and feedback registered in it, though they should of added "vancouver" into it. The Album ends with of course the Cohen cover "Hallelujah" and a haunting medley of the smiths "I know its over". Its funny how the only words he sings from it are "Oh mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head And as I climb into an empty bed, oh well, enough said I know it's over still I cling I don't know where else I can go, over Oh mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head" It sometimes makes me wonder if he knew his fate. Anyways over-all this a great peak at what jeff gave at his concerts, its just beauty at its best without any words sometimes.

Free Music Review: Stellar Live Performances From Jeff And His Band
Hit: 4 Stars

It's no secret that many knowledgable music lovers and talented musicians all over the world are devotees of Jeff Buckley's music. Mystery White Boy gives more than enough proof as to why performers like Thom Yorke, Chris Cornell, Elvis Costello, Chrissy Hynde, Jimmy Page, Duncan Sheik, Bernard Butler and many many others love Jeff Buckley's music; they all saw him play when he was alive.

Having heard many bootlegs of Jeff Buckley concerts, I must say that Mary Guibert (Jeff's mother) and guitarist Michael Tighe have truly picked out the finer points of Jeff Buckley's live sets throughout the 1995 - 1996 tours of the US, Europe and Austrailia.

Mystery White Boy contains renditions of 7 songs from Buckley's only proper studio album Grace, and it is rounded out by Big Star and Judy Garland (yes Judy Garland!) covers, as well as 3 unreleased Buckley originals. One of them, "What Will You Say" was recorded for Grace but wasn't included on the album. The version heard here isn't the best version I've heard of the song, but it is amazing none-the-less.

Jeff Buckley never played a song the same way twice, and his love and passion for music shines through on Mystery White Boys' outstanding versions of Dream Brother (better than the Bataclan version), Lilac Wine (great jazz vocal improvisations), Grace (a thunderous version), I Woke Up In A Strange Place, and Hallelujah (w/ a bit of the Smith's "I Know It's Over" thrown in).

If this is your first exposure to Buckley, this disc probably won't win you over, but that's okay. Go listen to Live at Sin-e, Grace and Sketches for My Sweetheart The Drunk...if they can't convert you, nothing will.

Free Music Review: Absolutely unforgettable
Hit: 4 Stars

For anyone who's never heard Jeff Buckley sing before, prepare to break your heart. The late, young musician has a vocal presence that is absolutely unearthly. Buckley was also a noise enthusiast (some of his early heroes included Led Zeppelin), but the swirling romanticism of his songs like "Last Goodbye", "Lover You Should Have Come Over," and "Mojo Pin" are unforgettable. And when he does covers of Nina Simone's "Lilac Wine", Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," and Big Star's "Kanga Roo," you're not likely to hear better (not even from their original artists).

****If you already own his one and only complete studio album "Grace," treat yourself to this live album. The dynamics are rawer, and non-"Grace" tracks like "I Woke Up in a Strange Place" and "What Will You Say" give a shimmering stage to what could have been.

Free Music Review: Proof of a magical performer
Hit: 4 Stars

I adore Jeff Buckley, he was truely an amazing muscial performer on all counts. This live collection is quite grand throughout, and really gives us a snapsnot of what could have been. The sound is overall very good, the dynamics of his songs sometimes require some knob turning during the quiet parts, but don't let that keep you from this disc. Those not entirely familar with his work should start with the disc, "Grace".(feel free to check out my review of it) This live CD contains most of that incredible material as well as a few covers. The Smith's, "I Know it's Over", is an all-too-sad reminder.

If you own a DVD, You might want to pick that up first. That in my book is 5 stars plus! It contains all sorts of bonus footage as well as an entire show recorded in Chicago. Seeing him as well as hearing him is such a treat, it's a must!

Free Music Review: Awesome, but not perfect
Hit: 4 Stars

First of all, I want to say that I think Jeff Buckley is the greatest musician to ever walk the planet. So why didn't I give this album a 5? Well, first off, the songs are all live versions, many of them from his Grace album. The unreleased songs like I Woke Up In A Strange Place, Moodswing Whiskey, The Man That Got Away, and an alternate version of Hallelujah, yeah, those are cool. But there are much better versions of all the rest of his live songs on other albums (commercial bootlegs, etc.). If you want to see some amazing live Jeff Buckley, buy the recently released Mystery White Boy video, an amazing document of a live show in Chicago that moves me to tears. Or pick up the Wayward Angel bootleg if you can find it, containing songs from that concert as well as some live material from his only appearance at the Glastonbury Festival.
