Free Music Notes for Sketches (For My Sweetheart the Drunk)Free Music Review: The mind of a great musician and a beautiful man Hit: 5 Stars
This album was released to give an idea of what jeff wanted to express in his next album, but never got to pin down and clean up. The goal was to put down exactly what he had recorded at the time he left the physical world, ascending to the position he may not have wanted. He clearly didn't like people focusing on the past so much that they didn't look to what new things we could do, what new places we could find. He also didn't subscribe to the obsession over musicians as idols("this entire show is dedicated to cuervo tequila and people magazine, both of which lead to...delusion"-live in chicago). But his thoughts put down here, which sometimes gently woo our sentimental hearts, and other times stab through our cold apathy, left him in a position to be some sort of legend; the memory of jeff was subject to poking and prodding by those who have a fascination with the death of someone known by many. But he lives on in many people's minds as an inspiration to move forward, taking new roads, to embrace spontaneity and all emotions we feel. Studio recorded demos comprise the first disk. The second: mostly 4-track home recordings while alone in Memphis. The final song on the second disk is a celebration of the time (short or long) that we have among the people who we can choose to love, an idea that jeff expressed consistently through his recorded life.
Free Music Review: a rare glimpse Hit: 5 Stars
As an artist, I am interested in the creative process just as much as I crave the satisfaction of the end-product. In this case, I feel blessed to have a glimpse into the process of such an amazing musician. I was not taken aback by the rawness of many of the tracks on this album - I was inspired by them. I feel as if I've been lead by Jeff himself into a room inside his mind where all of his creative genius was brewing, where ideas boiled over and out into the form of word and sound. It's a place without order or chaos, where nothing is thrown away and everything is considered. "Sketches" is the tangible evidence of this place where creation occurs, a place not often open to the public. Some of the most awkward sounding works are my favorites because they are REAL. They are unpolished stones, a parcel of rare jewels that we seldom get to see from any artist. Perhaps if Buckley's life hadn't come to such an untimely end, we would not have had this peep-hole look into his creative process. That is a trade which, without question, we would make to have back his life and a whole lifetime of music ahead. Since that barder is one we cannot make, we now hold these precious Sketches, snapshots given to us by those closest to Buckley that give us a rare look into the heart and soul of this beautiful man.
Free Music Review: Nobody does it better than Jeff Hit: 5 Stars
If you're looking for an introduction to the amazing Jeff Buckley, start with 'Grace', but once you've got a handle on him, come to this collection, because it contains some of his best stuff. In my opinion, Jeff Buckley was perhaps the greatest single talent of his generation, right up there with Hendrix. His music wasn't as revolutionary as Hendrix's, but it was earth-shattering in a much quieter individual way. One need only listen to Buckley's heart-wrenching ballad 'Morning Theft' to understand the affective power that this man possessed. He was clearly an amazing vocal talent, but that's only half the story because it was his songwriting as well as his astounding ability to bring new richness to covers that created the vehicles for his soaring vocals. Most will take a purely academic interest in the four-track demos on the second disc (with the exception of 'Jewel Box', which is outstanding as it is) but that shouldn't cause anyone to hesitate to buy this title because it is currently being priced like a single CD. I personally would pay nearly any price for a further glimpse into Jeff Buckley's music. It is CD's like 'Grace', 'Electric Ladyland', 'A Love Supreme', and perhaps 'Sketches' that make you feel like you're getting away with something by only paying $14.99 for such amazing music.
Free Music Review: Don't overlook this gem. Hit: 5 Stars
'Sketches' is a fantastic piece of music. The quality and sheer artistic genius of Jeff Buckley's work comes out in full force on the first disc, which alone is well worth the price of the set. It's hard to imagine what changes Jeff may have made, because the tracks are so captivating they seem perfect already. 'The Sky is a Landfill' is a smooth-yet-rockin' opener that like many tracks on this disc reaches heights Chris Martin and Coldplay can only dream of achieving. Throughout this collection one can see not only how influential Jeff has been, but the diversity of his own influences -- from the Prince-influenced (and Grammy nominated) 'Everybody Here Wants You' to the equally soulful gospel tune 'Satisfied Mind,' the legacies of Jeff and many who came before him shine through. The second disc gives a glimpse at what might have been; songs in the making. This disc is fascinating because it gives us a look into Jeff's songwriting and the process of experimentation he underwent to achieve his unique sound. This is more than Jeff playing around on a four-track (although he does play around a little); it is a glimpse of a true artist doing what he did best -- create. If you loved 'Grace' and/or have any sort of appreciation for Jeff's music, this set is a MUST HAVE. Pick it up.
Free Music Review: passionate, inspiring, beautiful...no words can express Hit: 5 Stars
A friend of mine introduced the music of jeff buckley fairly recently to me. I can not believe i've lived so long without this music in my life. A bit dramatic? well, as soon as you listen to this you will understand. This album has some of the most perfect songs i have ever listened to. "Everybody here wants you" is a song so alluring and passionate that my soul stirs every time i listen to it. "New Year's Prayer" "nightmares by the sea" and "Vancouver" are brilliant and haunting. "Morning Theft" is a poetic simple song that exudes such beauty i want to weep. "We could be so happy baby" is raw, vulnerable, and stripped of pretense...music Jeff probably wasn't on planning on anyone to listen to. This album isn't entirely melancholy and sad. I laughed when I heard the far from subtle "your flesh is so nice." It wasn't a song i expected to hear but i love it as well. For the new buckley listener i recommend starting with "Grace." Then move on to this and you will forever be an admirer of jeff buckley. Although it's an immense loss that we no longer have him to share his beautiful music with us, i thank god he did leave us with these few but precious songs.
