Free Music Notes for Jeff Wayne's Musical Version Of The War Of The WorldsFree Music Review: Awesome! Hit: 5 Stars
Being 25 years old, this music was not part of my childhood, so I didn't really know much about it until recently. The fact of it's existence had somehow gotten trough to me, since it has quite a (cult) following I guess, but now that it was re-released in a remastered version I thought it would make a nice birthday present for myself :)
And so it was. In the week since I got it, I've been playing it constantly and I'm just blown away with it. Especially the first disc is a masterpiece of atmosphere and musical flow. It really puts the images of the story in your head, and manages to be both very catchy and incredibly moving.
The second disc falls a bit flat after the eerie heights achieved on the first disc. The songs are a bit too long, with too much and slightly cheesy or overacted vocals, and the melodies aren't quite as catchy. But it's still pretty good, and the instrumental Dead London is still a highlight of the whole album.
Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend this album to everyone who just wants to be able to close his/her eyes and be sucked into another world by the music and the story. I also recommend reading the original H.G. Wells book of course!
Free Music Review: Just your standard spoken word / rock opera / sci-fi thing Hit: 5 Stars
I had forgotten all about this project until recently I heard the spoken intro used as a lead-in for a segment of Dennis Miller's radio show. The next caller correctly identified Jeff Wayne as the creator of the project, and I ordered it from amazon the next day!
It certainly does have a bit of the 70's disco Star Wars/wakka wakka feel to it. But once you give it a good listen, this thing can really grab hold of you. Burton's voice is spendid, as you would expect. The integration of the orchestration with the keyboard layers is done expertly. The entire cast, both in their speaking and singing roles, is just flat out great. I was particularly impressed with David Essex (who really evokes the sense of the hopeless dreamer) and Chris Thompson. The guitar/voicebox effect used when the Martians shout "Ulla!" is chilling.
Treat yourself to this CD. It is captivating, and fires up your imagination since you largely create your own visual storyboard. The overall packaging is first-rate.
I give it my highest recommendation.
Free Music Review: Amazing Musical Talent - Jeff, MORE MORE MORE! Hit: 5 Stars
I first bought this album (yes album) when it came out in the 70s. It was amazing then, and just as amazing now.
I find myself singing "Spirit of Man" in the shower (apologies to anyone within hearing distance)... and Forever Autumn will be one of my favorite love songs of all time... :)
Recently, I booked a trip to England, and (on a lark) wondered if someone had decided to pick this up as a stage musical (as far as I can tell, no one has). DAMN! What a missed opportunity.
However, there IS a 30th anniversary tour of WotW with Jeff Wayne and Company. Tour dates are here: http://www.thewaroftheworlds.com/.
I'd already booked a trip to London in the Fall, but I am trying to get my tickets changed so I don't have to miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
By the way, if you want some sneak peaks... have a look out on YouTube. There are some clips of the live show there.
Free Music Review: Good Cd Hit: 5 Stars
I originaly heard the recording from one of my friends records a couple years ago, and at first I was not to interested, but once it got playing I was hooked. Having been born many years after the recording I think it is a mark to how good it is that someone who's 21 would enjoy it, along with many of thier friends that have heard it. There are many themes that come out multiple times that really help to tell the storie and I had no problem knowing what was going on just by the music. The naration is great and well chosen. The bassline and the blend of musical genres is all wonderfull. To really enjoy it I think that you should take a couple hours to listen to it exclusivly and enjoy it, some of the tracks are great stand alone but overall it is best listened to start to finish. I found it to be more enjoyable than either of the movies and it really does The War of the Worlds justice.
Free Music Review: Forever Autumn No Longer Hit: 5 Stars
Praise be, they FINALLY re-released Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of the War of the Worlds!!
Obviously, it's release is meant to coincide with the release of Spielberg's new movie, so thanks to him for making the movie just so we could have this masterpiece in a wonderful new release.
The packaging on this excellent remastered edition is superb and the sound quality outstanding. This is a perfect gem all the way round.
As for the music itself....... there's nothing else quite like it and very few albums that exceed it's satisfying blend of sound and fury. Think Alan Parsons meets Edgar Winters Frankenstein.
Do yourself a favor and buy this CD. Turn the lights down low, spin the dial and be transported into Jeff Wayne's vision of the Alien Apocalypse. A truly epic journey into a mind altering experience awaits you.
