Free Music Review: Ain't it funny the difference a year can make

The album opens with five stunning tracks running the gamut of music styles, and blurring a few boundaries while she's at it. 'Love Don't Cost A Thing' is generic R'n'B with references to 'bling bling' and other popular-crowd idioms, but with a hooky chorus to boot it deserved the credit it duly received. (Sidenote: the RJ Schoolyard Mix, where the video draws its breakdown from, is far superior to the album version). 'I'm Real' appears in two incarnations on this second issue of 'J-Lo', firstly in its original, flirty pop version, and the crossover duet with Ja Rule which gave Jennifer the R'n'B/urban success she seemingly longed for. 'Play' is almost a carbon copy of Madonna's 'Music', from sentiment to lyrics to sound, and one can't help but wonder whether Jennifer's use of a four-letter expletive in the middle of the song was a blatant attempt to earn some 'street cred'... Regardless of the song's more theoretical shortcomings, it's a corker of a tune with an impressive sci-fi video clip. 'Walking On Sunshine' is 'J-Lo's answer to the previous years' dance hit 'Waiting For Tonight', and is every bit as appealing if not more because of the more urgent beats pummelling away in the background. Rounding off the 'Fab Five' is 'Ain't It Funny', a Latin mid-tempo ballad which highlights Jennifer's vocal strengths and aptly covers up anything about her delivery which is perhaps sub-standard.

At first I skipped over the rest of the songs on this release, thinking they couldn't quite live up to the impressive standard set by the first five. On second listen, they do and HOW. The songs are effectively divided into three categories... 'Carino' and 'Dame' are delicious semi-Latin pop tunes complete with brass and undeniably catchy melodies, whilst 'We Gotta Talk', 'That's Not Me' and 'That's The Way' hint at a more R'n'B/pop feel which was never fully realised on her debut record. 'Come Over' is what 'Should've Never' was MEANT to be from 'On The 6', and 'Secretly' sees Jennifer attempt a laidback jazz / lounge sound with resounding success. 'I'm Gonna Be Alright' is pure pop from top to bottom and was just as appealing when remixed by the Trackmasters for her next album release 'J To Tha L-O'.

Talk about progress. 'J-Lo' blows 'On The 6' out of the water. From the ultra-glamorous photos in the sleeve to the glittery diamond moniker which adorns the front cover and is duplicated throughout the packaging - this is J-Lo at her poppy best. The perfect mix between ballads, pop, and a few urban-tinged sizzlers (plus three Latin tunes for a bit of cultural balance!), something tells me Jennifer isn't going to release another CD like this for a LONG time. Perfect from start to finish.
