Free Music Notes for Rabbit Fur Coat

Free Music Review: Subtly amazing
Hit: 5 Stars

I am kind of a Saddle Creek addict. So it was only a matter of time before I found the great band that is Rilo Kiley. In this band i found my indie princess in Jenny Lewis, the lead singer with a certain amount of twang and always an abundance of emotion and passion. so when i found out that she was coming out with her solo, I regarding it with a mixture of anticipation and anxiety. Can she do it without Blake Sennett's grand style, or without the kind of poppy kick that so many Rilo Kiley songs have? I was pleasantly surprised

When I first put it in, it was kind of a shock. Rilo Kiley is more indie pop than folky, so when i heard an excess of folk and country tinged songs, i wasn't sure how I would take it. The first time I couldn't figure out if i liked it or not, but after a couple more listens I am positively obsessed. "Run Devil Run" is a short haunting song, that is truly more of an intro than a full-blow song. "The Big Guns" is a great country sounding song with the usual lyrical intimacy and passionate singing from this goddess. It is also worth mentioning that her accomplices, the Watson Twins, have gorgeous backing vocals. DON'T OVERLOOK THEM!

"Rise Up With Fists!!!" is an oddly titled song because it is a slow song, with a noticeable religious tint to the song. It is a pretty gorgeous song, though. "Happy" is probably my favorite song on the album. It is slow, pretty, and thoughtful; all things that jenny lewis pulls off like a folk legend. "The Charging Sky" is a simple, poppy folk song, very catchy and fun throughout. "Melt Your Heart" is predictably a slow and sad song about love and heartache. This song seemed instantly memorable and familiar to me, which is always a great thing in great new music.

"You Are What You Love" is a catchy, wise, and very well-written song. The whole song seems to have a perfect flow, and it is nothing but a pleasure to have this song on. "Rabbit Fur Coat" is a haunting, but not too great, song about the clash between classes. This is one of the two songs that i usually skip. "Handle With Care" is a cover by what i like to call the Indie Superfriends: Jenny Lewis, Benjamin Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie and the Postal Service, and Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes and Desaparacidos. I wish these three hadn't covered a song for their group effort, because they are all brilliant songwriters, and i think if they had collaborated on a song it would have blown me away. As it is, it is a gorgeous and awesome pop song, but I was hoping for a little bit more.

"Born Secular" is the other song that I find myself skipping past quite frequently. It is a good song, but it often seems pointless and anti-climatic. It might just be because it seems like a gospel song, and that irritates me after listening to the rest of this amazing indie folk album. "It Wasn't Me" is a great song to excuse the previous track, combining great melodies, witty lyrics, and some relaxing music. "Happy (Reprise)" is an under-one-minute closer that pulls together all of the great elements of the album to remind you how much you loved what you just heard.

In closing, if you like indie, folk, or just some amazing female vocals and songwriting, then just buy it. Don't try it, because it might not stick right away. I give my personal guarantee that you will love this album. Happy listening

Rabbit Fur Coat Poster

Known and loved by many as the enchanting front-woman for LA's Rilo Kiley, Jenny's vocal and songwriting gifts have continued to blossom at a rapid rate since that band's first album in 2000. Jenny's hauntingly soulful voice, sometimes bursting with buoyant spirit and at other times plaintive and world wearied, is deep, sensual and beguiling. Intricate storytelling and evocative lyrics infuse these songs with a captivating vibrancy but may be knocked sideways by the musical alchemy at play as a result of folk, country, and Southern gospel influences.
Channeling the evocative storytelling of Laura Nyro and the soulful sexiness of Dusty Springfield, singer/songwriter Jenny Lewis skips all contemporary studio gimmickry to proffer a near-perfect solo debut. The front-woman for indie darlings Rilo Kiley breaks away from the songwriting democracy she shares with that band's co-leader Blake Sennett (also of the Elected), drawing inspiration from the crackling vinyl albums of her youth. And from the opening notes of "Run Devil Run," an acapella gospel hymn sung with the Watson Twins, through the note-for-note cover of the Traveling Wilbury's "Handle With Care" (with Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst and Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard), Lewis verifies this is her record. Her goose-bump voice can be as mournful as it is optimistic, but remains perpetually mesmerizing on Rabbit Fur Coat's best songs: the god-fearing country-rocker "The Charging Sky," the radio-poppy "You Are What You Love" and, especially, the title track, a haunting, solo-guitar waltz of poor meets rich. --Scott Holter
