Free Music Notes for Degradation Trip Volumes 1 & 2Free Music Review: Jerry's Best Work Hit: 5 Stars
Sure, Alice In Chains was a marvelous group, perfectly positioned in the zeitgeist of the early 90's. But this is Jerry Cantrell's best and most consistently satisfying work. The full edition of "Degradation Trip" is more diverse musically and takes on a darkness even more intense than on the one-CD version. It's full of powerful playing, clever songwriting, and some of Jerry's best lyrics - an area of his work where he is still developing. Cantrell's voice is outstanding here, which addresses one of the few weaknesses from "Boggy Depot." And with more sinister vocal harmonies, one will easily recall the glory of "Dirt." "31/32" is perhaps the most affecting of the new songs, but frankly, this album works extremely well as a cohesive whole. Now for the next trick: can Jerry leave behind the utter despair inherent in these lyrics and write new songs reflecting a fuller range of life's emotions?
Free Music Review: "Get Born Again" Hit: 5 Stars
This album left me reeling. Simply one of the most AMAZING rock albums I have ever heard. Alice In Chains in my opinion was the band to end all bands, the prodigal son of rock music. Layne's death saddened me greatly. Many people were angry his death did not recieve as much publicity as Kurts death. This mainly because Kurt's death was a conspiricy, this was an obvious O.D. (R.I.P. LAYNE) The primary reason being that the real Genious behind Alice In Chains was Jerry Cantrell who wrote 99.9% of the bands material. I was hoping that Jerry would disappear from the music scene. Jerry did not disapoint with his return. Degredation Trip is an insane trip from start to finish, with great melodies and haunting ballads such as "Angel Eyes" and murky songs more that to his AIC song writing style such as "Hellbound". I can't describe this album...just buy it...its amazing, you won't regret it....
Free Music Review: Alice does not live here anymore Hit: 5 Stars
Anyone purchasing this album thinking its an attempt to bring back the past is in for a rude awakining! The opening song Pychotic Break sounds somewhat Alice like, maybe it was intended to be that way, but from there on out, be surprised! Like Degridation trip (the origional), the lyrics are ironic when you consider they were wrote before Layne passed, but shows respect to those he worked with. Jerry's voice is melodic and clean. His guitar playing is as strong as it ever was if not stronger and his song writing is amongst the best out there. No other artist from the late 80's - 90's who has tried to make it solo has held as true to what the return of real rock was about, especially in a decade when it seems like you have to scream, rap or be plain silly to make it. Roadrunner records should be commended for believing in one of the greatest artist ever.
Free Music Review: This is great! Hit: 5 Stars
Oh man! I can't express the affect this album has on my soul. I was a big fan of Boggy Depot and had meant to check this out for a long time after that came out but for whatever reason I hadn't gotten around to it. What a mistake! This album is great!
It runs the gamut from slow, soft ballads to deep, heavy, distorted rock tracks. I love it! A lot of the songs are very catchy and stick with you. But the real hook is the emotion that flows from the songs. It seems that Jerry really poured his soul into many of the tracks. A couple of songs speak to the despair one feels as he observes a tragic situation that he is powerless to stop or prevent. This has obvious significance in Jerry's life, but will reasonate with anyone that has found themselves in a similar situation.
It speaks to me and will to you too. Buy it.
Free Music Review: A letter to Jerry Cantrell... Hit: 5 Stars
Thank you, Jerry! Thank you for bringing AiC back! We, "grunge" orphans, couldn't be more happy to own such a brilliant masterpiece as this one.
We have been waiting for this kind of sound to come. This is a gift to us who loved Alice In Chains and still love. I even cried with nostalgia when I first listened to Psychotic Break, the first song. That's all I have to say. I don't need to write a huge review and try to explain why you should buy this CD right now. Just do it. It's even better than the last Alice In Chains album, I promise you.
Made to be a classic. From a huge Alice In Chains fan who was very disrupted by the unacceptable Seattle's signature hardrock death in the 90s and later, its zombification with weak bands like Puddle of Mud, Nickelback, Creed and The Calling.
Thank you once again.
