Free Music Review: JGB before it was Jerry Garcia Band
Hit: 5 Stars

Some of the review talk about how this is "not as good as the Dead". Well it's different because it's not the dead and it's not what became JGB. This is Jerry with a basic band creating HIS own sound and not being a part of the Grateful Dead. I was not a big Jerry fan until the 10th time I saw the Dead, did not understand what all the hype was about. Sometimes it takes that special Jerry show (with or without the Dead) to make you a true fan.

I had a bad bootleg of this show and it was incredible. This new recording is amazing and captures Jerry with alot of raw energy and it shows. If you are a Jerry or Dead fan this is one of the 10 best I've ever purchased (note: I don't have all the Dick's Picks, but I have about 50 shows on tape/CD). Do yourself a favor and buy this now.

Free Music Review: Window into Jerry's Musical Soul
Hit: 5 Stars

I have a large GD / Jerry collection and have run many "trees" to help distribute the music. Imho, this is the best official Grateful Dead / Jerry Garcia release of any sort. The sound quality is pristine and Jerry is way on.

The keyboard playing is of high quality. However, there are several 60 - 90 second keyboard solos in which an unusual special effect is used. Sort of funkadelic meets the jetsons. At first I was like "what the heck is that?" After 3 - 4 listens it didn't bother me any more. Keep in mind, this show is from Feb 1980, hence there is a 70's influence on the music. Given the vast amount of shows Jerry played, I'm sure he welcomed a different sound.

Don't let a few brief solos sway you, this is a fantastic show!

Free Music Review: Let's Call a Spade a Spade, Jerry WAS The Grateful Dead
Hit: 5 Stars

The Jerry Garcia Band is just that... all about Jerry. This show is all about Jerry. I consider myself a deadhead, but given the choice to see JGB or The Grateful Dead, the Jerry band wins EVERY TIME without question. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Dead, but Jerry was EVERYTHING that made the Dead so darn great, without the cheesy filler that is Bob Weir. JGB is the BEST way to enjoy the beautiful gift that Jerry shared with us all, and this show is ONE GENEROUS GIFT! If you like the DEAD you will LOVE JGB, and this is a great jumping off point for all of you deadheads who have never seen or heard JGB.

You owe it to yourself to get this Show. Buy it NOW!

Free Music Review: Ultra Jerry
Hit: 5 Stars

This is definitely the best Garcia Band release yet. Jerry in top form, playing long groovy jams on some of the rarer JGB tunes. The After Midnight->Eleanor Rigby instrumental->After Midnight is excellent, but there are some even finer gems on this release. This album has a lot of swing to it. Its hard to describe a lead guitar player as a master of swing, but thats what we have here. Groove and swing and a kind of music that is totally undescribable. Great stuff. Also, there is something fun about the keyboard player from these early 80's shows. He plays this ultraweird keyboard tone that adds a new dimension to these songs. Erik at notesfromtheroad.com

Free Music Review: JGB speaks to me as the Grateful Dead never have.
Hit: 5 Stars

The Grateful Dead are a fantastic band. The Jerry Garcia band is the quintessential example of the soul of Jerry the man. This was his band. He is the centerpiece of a band that morphed and changed over time and era as the Dead never did. Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders, The Legion of Mary, Reconstruction, and The Jerry Garcia band are in my humble opinion the greatest expressions of Jerry Garcia. This expression in its form is something the Dead simply never did nor could have provided for him. JGB is all Jerry. All Jerry is always "All Good". The most soulful guitarist that ever lived.
