Free Music Notes for After Midnight: Kean College 2/28/80 (Dig)Free Music Review: Stellar Jerry but Cheesy Keyboard solos Hit: 4 Stars
While I agree with all of the above superlatives regarding Jerry's playing on this release I really really miss Merl or Melvin's thick greasy hammond tones. The keyboard tones here are quite dated, something you may expect to hear on an old hawkwind release but not with Jerry. The fills and backup are fine, even good at times when he uses as nice rhodes tone, its the occasional keyboard solo that ruin cuts for me, Catfish John especially. Again, Jerry is in fabulous form, as the liner notes say, he even remembers the lyrics! As long as you can take the dated 70-80s cheesy synthesizer solo now and then, that's why I had to take a star off! And yes, After Midnight alone is worth the price of admission.
Free Music Review: wow. Hit: 4 Stars
i can't believe this is out on cd. i just stumbled across it today! my late husband and i had this on tape years and years ago. absolutely my favorite dead/jerry related show. but the one we had.. had masterpiece, dear prudence and russian lullaby on it. it's really too bad they didn't include those with this release and it's the reason i'm giving it four stars. i did however find the complete version at the jerry garcia store. the extra disc is included free and has the late show.. entitled "way after midnight."
Free Music Review: Not even close to the 1991 JGB Release Hit: 4 Stars
Kean is a better than average performance but pales in comparison to the 1991 2 CD JGB release which is the Cornell 1977 of JGB shows. Kean lacks electricity and magic typically found at the better shows.
Free Music Review: The Jerry Garcia Band .....Mostly for Dead Heads... Hit: 3 Stars
Listen ..Lets be Objective and stop the Idol Worship..Most of us are accustomed to listening to The Dead and are indoctrinated
to Jerry's playing and appreciate the nuances of his fine playing..But this is not dynamic music. The Keyboard playing is weak and the drummer has no snap to his playing..The average person who is not a Dead fan might even find this recording..
I hate to say it ....boring..But that being told Jerry's guitar playing here is fine and crisp ,his old pal John Kahn's Bass playing is on Jerry's level.. I miss the Outstanding Ladies backing Jerry up on later recordings adding a great dynamic to the songs. If you are a dead fan by all means get this recording and enjoy. If you are not a Dead fan and have a open mind take a listen to a Fine guitarist stetching out with some new players other than the Dead.
Free Music Review: Not the best JGB Hit: 3 Stars
3 stars is way too harsh for this recording, but there are better JGB discs out there. I'd start with the 1991 double disc recordings, then I'd go back the Saunders/Garcia era. Check out the Legion of Mary vol. 1 from Rhino, or the old Keystone discs. The problem with these discs, is that it's all Garcia. It's Jerry jamming, with 3 other guys backing him up. There are great moments in it, but in my opinion there is just nothing too special about this show that warrants this release.
