Free Music Review: If you like Garcia guitar...

...then you will appreciate this release. There are some particularly evocative solos on this recording, all uniquely Jerry. My only problem with this disk is the recording of Knockin' on Heaven's Door. It is wayyyy to slow. I mean, I like when the Dead et al plays songs slower (i.e. Dead Set's Friend of the Devil), but this got a little out of hand.

Donna single handedly ruins this recording.

A release such as this reminds me that there are other factors involved in deciding which Dead/Jerry shows to release on CD. By that I mean this performance, although it has some bright moments, (only musical, none vocal) is not as inherently valuable as many other shows the JGB played in the mid seventies. It is painfully tentative at times, especially during song intros and vocal parts. Listening to them get these songs off the ground, (some never really do) I feel as though I'm witnessing a potential train wreck in slow motion. But I`ll say again, there are some very bright shining musical moments on these discs, I just don't feel there are enough to justify the release. The sound quality isn't great either. I do appreciate GD records for encoding new releases in HDCD which this one is. But it's rather lost on this release. There's lots of tape hiss and wobble and the soundstage sounds rather repaired. If you're new to GD/JGB, or if you don't care for Donna, don't bother with this one. If you're a completist collector, save this `til last. Spend your money on something else on your list.

Some things are better left unsaid. And unpublished as well. This is a meandering collection of nearly unlistenable material. Only suitable for the most die-hard Jerry fan who promise friends to never put into the CD player while they are present. The guitar work sounds like my kids working on their scales. Above all the musicians sound totally uninterested in what they are playing. The lack of energy is omnipresent. The reviews that note the guitar work must be joking. Please try the Pizza Tapes or Shady Grove for guitar work by Garcia that rises above the totally mundane. Sheesh. I know the guy is dead but you can't give something 5 stars for that (well, maybe 4 if he recorded this mess after he died). Please try and listen to this at a store before laying down hard cash. I have to give it 2 stars because I'd reserve one star for classics like "Count Basie Swings the Beatles", etc. Also, I'd understand wanting to buy this if you were actually at the concert and had a pleasant evening that you'd like to relive through the recording.

Free Music Review: Don't You Let This Deal Go Down!!!
Hit: 2 Stars

I love the JGB and I am genuinely excited about upcoming releases, but this recording didn't impress me. I think the problem was the band line-up. I know the cast of characters changed over the years, but this is a weak ensemble compared to Keystone, Legions of Mary, and the 1991 self-entitled masterpiece. The bottom line for me was that I've heard better versions of these songs performed by different personnel. I hope to hear Legions of Mary material with Martin Fierro on horns as well as Merl Saunders. That's top shelf JGB. By the way, I returned the cd.
