Free Music Review: Latin jazz meets flamenco

This hybrid disc, a fusion of jazz and flamenco is oh, so sweet. Jerry Gonzalez leads an ensemble cast of musicians that add eccentric flavors to this world music stew. The music varies from meditative to fiery cultural reflections.The songs sung by Diego "El Cigala" Corren Tiempos De Alegria / Teatro Real adds a dimension to the disc that can only be matched by the brilliance that the flamenco guitar imparts on this collaboration. His vocals are superb and genuine flamenco. The contributions on vocals by Diego "El Cigala" Lagrimas Negras on "Gitanos de la Cava pushes the musical envelope from Miles Davisesque trumpet improvisation to a musical duel where Diego "El Cigala" matches Gonzalez note for note. On the 9+ minute track "Obsession" what begins like straight jazz suddenly transforms into a melodic gut-wrenching performance by Diego "El Cigala" where he pours his soul out, followed by jazz interplay by Los Piratas del Flamenco, ending with more vocals and world music chorus chanting; it's a very cool song, in a hip jazzy-flamenco way. "Pirata de Lucia" shows off the talents of Jerry Gonzalez with some flamenco guitar and nice percussion. this is world music at it's finest especially if you like Latin jazz or flamenco. Highly recommended for the those sketches of Spain moments.
