Free Music Notes for Jersey Boys (2005 Original Broadway Cast Recording)

Free Music Review: MUCH MORE THAN JUST AN IMITATION !!
Hit: 5 Stars

I am very, VERY happy to say that I was able to see "Jersey Boys"
on Broadway the other night! It was as fantastic as you've all
heard, and the four leads are all fine dramatic actors as well
as singers. I was a bit hesitant to get the CD--I mean, why
would you need it if you already own music by the real group?
But I am also happy to tell you that this album stands on its
own as a very entertaining ride through the career of one of the
most important vocal groups of the rock era. The CD, like the
show, is VERY fast paced. There is some dialogue between songs
that helps to move the story along and gives you a sense of "being
there". Many of the songs are shortened versions of
the hits (some are full-length, like "Dawn", my favorite) just
like in the play. This may be jarring at first, but it helps
to propel the story and make room for the dramatic story arc.
It is just a fun journey from one great moment to another. John
Lloyd Young, as Frankie Valli, has gotten a lot of acclaim (and
a Tony Award) for his amazing vocals, and deservedly so. But the
other members of the group are all wonderful singers, and they
have perfected that unique sound of the Four Seasons. (Just
listen to the sound clips here.) The CD was produced by Bob
Gaudio himself, so the authenticity is right there! If any of
you are looking for a fun, uplifting CD to pop in your stereo
or car CD system, this is IT. And by all means, go see the
show if you can. These "Boys" are magical.

Hit: 5 Stars

The August Wilson Theater was filled to the rafters with men and women of a certain age who were definitely of the Frankie Valli Generation. They sat quietly in their conservative dress and spoke quietly as the house lights dimmed. I thought: Well, this is gonna be a dull evening. The first bars of a familiar Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons song played and these old timers (me among them) were on their feet cheering, stomping, clapping, yelling and just dancing in the aisles! And this was how the entire evening went! For one night the cast of 'The Jersey Boys' transformed us back to the 60s and our youth. We were young, perky, full of energy and hope. The world belonged to us.

The show has garnered all of the praise of every newspaper and magazine in NYC. I haven't seen reviews like this in years and years. I thought I knew what to expect before the curtain went up. As fabulous as I assumed singer/actor John Lloyd Young (Frankie Valli) would be, I was not prepared for his incredible voice and talent. It just doesn't get any better than this. This CD is one of the most outstanding Broadway soundtrack ever. And in my 63 years I have purchased more than a few of the classics. This one is an absolute MUST. If you can't fly to NYC to see the show then this is the next best thing.

Each actor/singer was outstanding and worked their butts off. It was an evening of magic that I know I will never see again on Broadway. SEE THIS MUSICAL! And also buy the CD. It's a winner in spades.

Free Music Review: Oh, What A CD!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

The JERSEY BOYS (2005 OBC)CD is fantastic! I haven't seen the musical nor am I a big Four Seasons fan, but I can't stop listening to it.

After seeing the commercial for the musical and catching a glimpse of the performance of "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" (a song I truly love), I decided to buy JERSEY BOYS. And I'm glad I did.

Either from other artists remaking the songs or from distant childhood memories, I was amazed that I knew a lot of the material. Mostly all of the tracks were familiar.

The cd has some dialogue in it that explains the situations the group or individuals were/are in, before the songs start, so if you haven't seen the musical it helps tell the story.

Now the real gem in the JERSEY BOYS cd is John Lloyd Young as Frankie Valli. The rest of the cast is good, but oh baby...this guy is all that! Just listen to Young's voice on "Sherry" as he goes up and down the scale. He sings like an angel.

My two favorite tracks: "My Eyes Adored You" and of course "Can't Take My Eyes Off You."

Anyway, if you're wondering about whether or not you should buy this cd because you aren't a big Four Seasons' fan or haven't seen the musical, don't worry...buy it. The music is familiar, it tells a story, the songs are great, and John Lloyd Young is the cherry on top!

Free Music Review: Who loves you, pretty baby? The audience!
Hit: 5 Stars

"Jersey Boys" is a superb example of that risky genre of theatre, the juke-box musical. It works, and works well, because the storyline simply follows the rise and eventual breakup of the early '60s boy band, The Four Seasons, and the songs, most of them well known to Baby Boomers and their offspring, fit nicely into the plot, with no sense of artifice. But what really makes this musical shine is the performance of the four actors who take on the roles of Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito, and Nick Massi. The Tony Award-winning John Lloyd Young is probably as close to perfect as you can get as Frankie Valli; he sings an excellent falsetto, and his acting is delightful, and spot on. Christian Hoff, a Broadway veteran, does a pitch-perfect job as the cocky DeVito, and J. Robert Spencer likewise as the bass vocals/bass guitarist Massi, who was the first to leave the group. One of the most pleasant surprises of the play is young Daniel Reichard as singer/songwriter Bob Gaudio. He is a charmer, with a beautiful, flexible voice, and fine acting chops. The play comes to a rousing conclusion with the band's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the closing number, "Who Loves You, Pretty Baby," has the audience on its feet, roaring with enthusiasm. The cast album is a joy to listen to--five stars to this one.

Free Music Review: The 4 Seasons Live On
Hit: 5 Stars

Broadway musicals based upon the music catalog of an artist or artists is increasingly becoming popular. The majority aren't that good, though some are much better than others, e.g. MAMMA MIA! and MOVIN' OUT. I hadn't seen or heard a catalog-based musical that I thought was outstanding. That was until I heard the soundtrack to JERSEY BOYS. I admit that many of the songs I had heard growing up because of my parents (they only listened to 1950-1960s music and Frankie Valli was a favorite of my Mom's). Still, even if I hadn't grown up listening to these songs, I think I would have enjoyed this album. The music is exceptionally done! Usually for a soundtrack I list some of my favorite songs from the album, but I enjoyed all of the music on JERSEY BOYS. I guess my favorite is "Ces Sorees-la" because I had never heard a foreign language version of "December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)" before. I also enjoyed how there are snippets of the show's dialogue scattered throughout the album. It helps to tie things together and give a listener an idea of the general plot of the musical. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys good music. You don't even have to like musicals to enjoy listening to this album.
