Free Music Notes for Jersey Boys (2005 Original Broadway Cast Recording)

Free Music Review: Loved the Show---Love the CD
Hit: 5 Stars

My husband and I are going to see the Broadway show for the second time on Saturday. Oh, what a night! We live in Manhattan and go to a lot of plays and musicals. This one is the best. John Lloyd Young, as Frankie Valli, is unbelievable, singing 27 songs in two and a half hours, many with that demanding falsetto. Once you see him, you understand how no one could touch him for the 2006 Tony (and we saw just about every other actor nominated). The CD really captures the excitement and magic of the show. I love the way they weave in some of the dialog, so the listener can understand the story. That's what separates this musical from other so-called juke box fare---Jersey Boys actually has a story to tell, and a compelling one at that. For those of us who grew up in the 60s and listened to the Four Seasons, no one really understood how they got there and what happened to them on the way up (and down, and up again). Truly an amazing story. If you are planning a trip to New York, buy your tickets well in advance. When I went to pick up my tickets the other day, they were already selling tickets for next September. Talk about sold out!

Free Music Review: The Book makes the Cover
Hit: 5 Stars

That Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons songbook is filled with recognizable, melodic and popular harmonies is a well known fact. The art of making a play based on an artists songbook is not new and has met with varying degrees of success, proving one thing, to really play well, there must be written a strong book to go with the music.

In the case of Jersey Boys, the book is excellent. So good, that it elicits in the observer the emotions of a first rate melodrama; laughs, interesting characterizations and yes, a few tears here and there. The playwrights found enough drama in the true (ok, mostly true) story of the "Boys" to use it as their book. It is a fairly typical story of the rise to fame, complete with egos run amok, vanity on parade, jealousies and financial scandal. Another classic story of failures leavened by redemption.

Though the basic storyline is not really new, the performances are strong, so good that you end up caring for each of the main characters. And that is what good stage performances are ultimately about, making you care. Well worth seeing...and listening.

Free Music Review: Just like being in the front row. INCREDIBLE!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I was fortunate to see the LA production at the Ahmundson Theater on the 22nd of this month, and even in the nose-bleed section, it was just incredible. The build-up to the first true Four Seasons song is huge, and when the first notes of "Sherry" are sung, my whole body was one big goose bump. One of the fastest moving plays I've seen where everyone takes part in scene transformation and sets are sometimes only struck for a minute or two before a new one takes shape. A very interesting storyline which was surprising in detail. I consider myself quite a musicologist (?), having spent my high school years listening to this group and I was unaware of how their futures could have turned either good or bad. Thank goodness for the surprise of the story - Joe Pesci!

I didn't know what to expect with this CD but was glad to hear the added dialogue which was so important in the song lead-ins on stage. The LA actors/musicians were so accomplished that I can't even imagine how talented the other US productions must be. It was a real treat to see the LA troupe on Youtube with Jay Leno. Look it up.

Free Music Review: The best the Jersey Boys will ever sound!
Hit: 5 Stars

I never saw the show on Broadway with John Lloyd Young as Frankie, but I saw the touring cast in Seattle last night. This cast recording sounds better than the live show. The only thing this recording is missing is the complete songs from the show. I think parts of songs were cut out to make it all fit on one CD, and the song "I Go Ape" was completely left out.
Aside from that, this is an amazing cast recording. In my opinion, John Lloyd Young's falsetto is smoother than the original Frankie Valli. All of the songs on here are also more upbeat than the originals, and are extremely catchy. The added dialogue aslso helps tell the story as you listen to the songs. Be aware that a couple F bombs are on the second track, and there is suggestive dialogue on "December 1963" and "My Boyfriend's Back".
This is a great album and I promise that you will be listening to it over and over. I've had it since march and listen to it almost every day and it still doesn't get old. I reccomend it to any fan of the original Four Seasons.

Free Music Review: Almost as good as seeing it on Broadway!
Hit: 5 Stars

I purchased this soundtrack in anticipation of seeing the musical on Broadway, & it was fantastic!!! Almost just like being there... I received it about a week prior to watching the show in New York for the first time, & I listened to the cd twice that very same day! By the time I saw "Jersey Boys" at August Wilson Theater, I already knew all of the playlist. Once you listen to this soundtrack, you will be convinced that they really are the Four Seasons (they sound so close to the real thing) - it was so amazing!!

Yet, this is no substitute for watching the pure talent of John Lloyd Young in person. (I'm such a HUGE fan of John Lloyd Young and Christian Hoff!) The original cast is so awesome & so very talented! "Jersey Boys" is my favorite show on Broadway now, and this cd will get you in the mood to see their show. "Jersey Boys" is so worthy of all 2006 Tony Awards it won. You simply MUST go see this show with the original cast of Christian Hoff, John Lloyd Young, Daniel Reichard, & J. Robert Spencer!
