Free Music Review: A welcome departure for Jesse McCartney?
Hit: 4 Stars

Jesse McCartney. To teenage girls, a sex symbol. To guys, well, the guy who gets all the girls. But despite multi-platinum appeal in the beginning, McCartney's career sort of went the other way after the somewhat deflated sales figures for his sophomore release. And as the trend goes, he's returned from relative obscurity with a new image and musical direction.

Departure is indeed a fitting title to this third effort, as McCartney changes things up with a more Urban/R&B club oriented sound. Gone are the Disney-fied overtones of his previous releases in a blatant, though admittedly successful bid for a return to mainstream relevance. Though to be fair, there are traces of his former sound on Departure.

The opening track, "Leavin'", is also the first single off of Departure, and it sets the consistently beat-oriented, "produced" vibe of the record. It's catchy Top 20 material, and probably one of the stronger tracks on the album. "It's Over" keeps the vibe and flow going, leading into the decidely poppy and charmingly childish "How Do You Sleep?" McCartney employs a lot of falsetto, textural flourishes, and emotive inflection, which sort of balances out the otherwise spit-shine sound of the production.

A couple of the tracks are kind of weak compared to the rest of the record. "Into Ya", "Runnin'" - these are ones I tend to skip over in favor of the more engrossing pop melodies of "Told You So", "How Do You Sleep", and "Relapse" - which lends a distinct dance-pop flavor that is littered generously throughout Departure. It is indeed a rather interesting hybrid of styles and textures that give Jesse a bit more cred than some of the more vanilla Top 40 acts of today.

I was rather shocked that, despite the album's solid and mostly consistent track list, there was one song that stood out above all. "Not Your Enemy" is an infectious pop ballad with all of the hallmarks of what would have been a huge hit a few decades ago. From the orchestral backdrop to the piano-driven melody, it drips pure Adult Contemporary in the vein of the classics. The song has a magic about it, and it creates warmth while distinguishing itself from the other tracks on Departure.

Jesse McCartney is a strong writer and a great vocalist, and he will probably be around for a while yet - even despite the fact that he may never match the multi-platinum success of Beautiful Soul. Departure is a solid record with a surprising, though modest twist in an otherwise crowded sea of generic.

Free Music Review: Never heard of him, but I like this album
Hit: 4 Stars

I always check for new music Mondays to see who is releasing what, but I didn't see anybody I knew so I got ready to close the website when the beat to "Leavin" dropped. I immediately started playing the full album, and I'm digging this guy's voice, melody, and the beats. From reading the other reviews, apparently this is very new for him. I don't know what audience he's trying to reach, but I can easily see songs from this album getting some radio play on R&B and Pop stations. He may not want to be compared to other artists, but Jesse's voice reminds me slightly of Justin Timberlake's due to subject matter and chorus lines. However, it's more happy than Timberlake, and I get more pop than R&B (think Donnie from "Making the Band 4"). I just bought this album in case I don't hear it on my favorite radio stations. "Not Your Enemy" is a song I can learn from unfortunately, but "Leavin" is probably my favorite track although all of them are really good.

Note: To the reviewers who are saying this album is Rap or Hip Hop, minus "Rock You," which absolutely reminds me of Justin Timberlake, nothing on this album has rapping on it. It's definitely R&B and pop though.

Free Music Review: nice change of pace
Hit: 4 Stars

from Jesse McCartney. His third effort "Departure" is just that a great departure from what fans have come to expect. With more of a hip-hop/pop feel to it than any of his other releases. But it isnt a token song here or there that sounds a little hip-hop. You can tell it in the vocals, writing and the different producers that are ever present on the record. It makes for an all around nicely done cd for Mr. McCartney and one that should get a lot of play from not only fans but radio DJs as well.

Fav tracks:

"Leavin" (the 1st single released)
"It's Over (one of several that i could repeat over again)
"How Do You Sleep? (same as above)
"Told You So"
"Relapse" (favorite)
"Freaky" (with a crazy beat that you'd hear at the club)
"Not Your Enemy" (nice closer about the girl treating him wrong because of what her ex did)

4 star release and purchase worthy as well.
