Free Music Review: Nice music! Bought it for my wife...kept it for myself!

I bought this album as one of Amazon.com's mp3 daily deals because it was an outstandng bargain AND I thought my wife would like it. I'm sure she will, but I found this album to be exremely impressive in terms of some of my tastes in music. Once I had this set of tracks downloaded I put it on and Jessie Baylin's flowing music was outstanding.

Baylin shows great diversity within her soft sound. At times her music reminded me of Pop+light country, a la Alison Krauss. Other tracks had a Natalie Merchant-ish quality, slow and melancholy. Yet other tracks pulled on a toned down sound reminiscent of Maria Muldar's "Midnight at the Oasis."

How can I describe this music...a recipe? OK, I"ll give it a shot:

Take a dash of melancholy, go ultra-light on the country, add a pinch of blues, a whiff of pop, mix with lulling acoustic and steel guitars - at times liberally and at times sparingly, heat but do not overcook, and you get "Firesight."

With winter coming on, this would be a good album to turn on during a cozy winter afternoon when you just don't want to go anywhere or do anything but relax inside and maybe sip from a warm mug.

I look forward to future efforts from Baylin.

Firesight makes good on the critical praise and grass-roots fan support that's already been heaped upon 24-year-old Jessie Baylin. The2008 album offers a vibrant, soulful showcase for her talents as both an uncommonly insightful songwriter and a deeply expressive, effortlessly charismatic vocalist. Recorded in the artist's recently adopted hometown of Nashville with noted producer Roger Moutenot (Yo La Tengo, Rogue Wave), Firesight features contributions from some of Nashville's most respected rock players, and songwriting collaborations with such notable co-writers as Whiskeytown member Mike Daly and grammy-winning songwriter/performer Jesse Harris, L.A. Troubadour Zack Hexum and the Rembrandts' Danny Wilde.
