Free Music Notes for Jesus Christ Superstar (The New Stage Production Soundtrack)Free Music Review: 22 years of super fan Hit: 4 Stars
I have been a super fan for JCS for 22 years, since when I saw it at a theater. I have been really crazy about this music, execpt one thing, I wish it included the Resurrection of Jesus. I was even practiced acting for a year, even though my major field of study at college was sculpture. I wanted be a musical star.Because of that I like too much JCS. And recently I had chance to watch JCS VHS 2001. I really like it. I looked for this CD for long time. Because I could not find this any CD store. I was really happy when I got this CD from AMAZON.com. Glenn Cater was very good at this even though he got a little worse voice than Steve Balsamo. Glenn Cater acted and sang very well. I think Glenn Cater was the best Jesus for JCS so far. He really knew how to sing this music.-Believe me I was trained acting play and I listened to JCS music so many times.- I know about this music. I can see he put his effort in it to make good song. I like the way he sing. Jerome Pradon and Tony Vecent were the best Judas and Simon. Michael Shaeffer(Annas) and the other singer did really well, too. Most of them are very good singers and actors, except Ric Mayall( king Herod), Renee Castle(Mary Magdalene). They are not fit to do this. I really like the song "I don't know how to love him." But not one on this CD. I think Yvonne Eliman was the best Mary Magdalene for JCS. Alis Cooper was the best king Herod. They really knew how to sing this music. I wish this CD include the other important Judas' songs - "Dammed for all time", "Blood money",end part of "Judas death" and "Jesus must die" these were very good music when I watch the VHS. If you have Home Theater System at home, buying JCS DVD 2001 will be better.
Free Music Review: A Lot to Like About this Version Hit: 4 Stars
The Good: To me, this version of the stage play has the best production values and arrangements thus far. The movie version and original stage version, were good for their time, but listening to them in this day and age is often like listening to that tinny stereo you had as a kid. The sound here is bold and brash. It's loud, it's filling, and really rocks. "The Overture", "Simon Zealotes/Poor Jerusalem" and "Trial Before Pilate" are exceptional standouts. With one exception, the singers here do a great job.
I will say that Carl Anderson is probably the best Judas ever, and Yvonne Elliman the best Mary, but the vocals here (Jerome Pradon as Judas, and Renee Castle as Mary) are top notch. Famed British actor is excellent as King Herod, and probably outdoes anyone else who's ever played the role. As for Jesus, Glenn Carter is terrific. On "I Only Want To Say" he knocks it out of the park.
The Bad: The only thing I didn't like is whoever plays Pilate here is excessively overacting during "The 39 Lashes". Dial it back some, dude!
The other thing about the disc is that it's a single and while crammed to the hilt at 79 minutes, it still means some songs had to be cut, most glaringly, "Damned For All Time/Blood Money". Also missing, "This Jesus Must Die" "The Arrest" and "Pilate and Christ". In addition, "Judas' Death" is highly edited to fit into the time frame.
The DVD features everything and is also recommended.
Free Music Review: Hmmmmm Hit: 4 Stars
Ok, so, comparing the soundtrack and the original album to this, we are missing a couple songs. You really need Blood Money to get the full effect, yet this version seems to do well without it, despite the fact it is a key song. The song from the movie soundtrack is not necesarily needed, but I thought it was a good addition. Musically, I like the updates. And Mary Magdelene, OH-MY-FRICKING-GOD!!!! The Mary's on the other versions are great and right for the time, but Renee Castle is phenomenal, I don't care what anyone says. "I don't know...love him" had me in tears. Of the three, I think this is the best version I've heard. She combines he best of the two previous Mary's and yet is a unique and wonderful Mary Magdelene. For that reason alone, I should give this 5 stars, but the song omissions keep me from doing so. At any rate, this does not disappoint for anyone who owns or has listened to the other two versions of this. The CD is fully emotive, and you feel like you are actually going through all this with the characters. Pick this apart all you like, this is a good listen.
Comparing characters, there are certain aspects of each that I like. I thought Ian Gillian's Jesus was a little better overall, but this Jesus is a bit more emotive. There are aspects of all three Judas's I like so it makes it hard to pick a winner there.
All in all, if you like Superstar, you'll love this album, despite, or because of, what is presented.
Free Music Review: A good play can be good forever. Hit: 4 Stars
Timeless... That's what I thought of Jesus Christ Superstar when I first saw it in the seventies with Ted Neely. I had not had the chance to see anyone bring it back to life convincingly, though. Until I saw this version. Rik Mayall's almost stoic hilariousness conveys exactly the thoughts in King Herod's mind, a cynic to the core, jealous of popularity and hoping to be convinced. The role of Pilate is superbly convincing, from the harshness during Jesus's first trial to the heart-broken man looking for a way to save a life that is obviously filled with some power he himself knows, after a dream he had, will place him in history books as the villain.Caiaphas is solid and dark, Annas is just plain scary (which is the idea, I believe), Judas could NOT have had a better actor (Jerome Pradon is simply brilliant in his role)... and well, what can ANYBODY really say about Glenn Carter? Some people say he was a bit lacking in character, but to me he conveyed the necessary mellowness or strength whenever needed, not to mention his awsome voice. The only objection I have in regards to this revival is the bland role of Mary Magdalene. There's so much more one can do with her lead songs, and Renee Castle seemed to lack both voice AND expression. But otherwise, this deserves a thumbs up in all the other directions.
Free Music Review: It's not the Original, But I Really Don't Want To See A Hit: 4 Stars
Bunch Of Sixty-Five Year Olds Up There Anyway!First of all, I am a die hard fan of the original cast and the '73 movie cast. I try to have an open mind though. Jerome Pradon (as Judas) takes a little getting used to, but he grows on you. He's very theatrical when he sings, and I actually grew to like his performance very much. Murry Head (the original) is very hard to beat. Glenn Carter does a great job as Jesus - period. It really wouldn't be very hard, however, to outdo any of the past Jesuses as Judas always stole the shows anyway. Renee Castle is OK as Mary. She has a wonderful voice, but she cries too much for my taste. I don't care how good someone's voice is though, because nobody will ever be able to take over for Yvonne Elliman as the best Mary. She has such a unique voice (which 78's Disco Hit 'If I Can't Have You' proves beyond any doubt with its staying power). Frederick B. Owens is amazing as Caiaphas. Anyone who can sing with a voice that deep is amazing. (And you should see him live - Wow!) The rest of the cast is wonderful, and they all add something new and unique to their supporting roles. Enjoy the show.
