Free Music Review: The Iconic JETHRO TULL best of/rarities CD

First off, I've nothing to add to the debate about the missing tracks, or the difference between the British and US release of this CD. I had the original 2LP set, as my first "TULL" album in college, when i found out about this band. Later, when the CD was born, this was the first TULL i bought on CD. When you have an LP that you get used to, the flow of song to song, or rarities matched to hidden gems from the first handful of albums, you consider the album a work onto itself. Remember, when this was available as a CD in the USA, the 2001 REMASTERS/BONUS TRACKS were not available. When those remastered/bonus tracks came out, I suppose they deleted this album, because it was considered superfulous. What a mistake! Sure, this was a type of best of, but actually, it was closer to something like the Beatle's HEY JUDE album. Except for four songs (or six songs, if you had the LP or double CD) all of this album was session outtakes, single A and B sides of songs not on albums, and a live side recorded at Carnegie Hall. Even with the bonus tracks on the first three CDs, you STILL dont get almost half of this album. So, you have to ask yourself, "Do I want to spend the money for the outtakes and live material?". Naturally, if you dont have the 2001 remastered editions of the first 3 albums, then this album is ESSENCIAL for the Tull fan. I am talking FIRST PURCHASE. Seriously. The Singles collected on this CD are some of the best TULL ever put out. And, even if you DONT care for the live JT from Carnegie Hall, and you have the 2001 REMASTERS, you still wouldnt have songs like Dr. Bogenbroom, For Later, Up the Pool, etc. If you wanted NURSIE, you'd have to track down the sampler CD from the Boxset. And, i used to love the piano parts to DHARMA FOR ONE on the live side. (The first live song has a kinda long spoken word intro, and DHARMA FOR ONE live, tho far more exciting than the version on the first LP, does have a drum solo in it. Don't worry tho, You wont be listening to something like TOAD by CREAM.) As for the two songs removed because of time restrictions, I do miss them. If this CD were to be rereleased as a TWO CD set, I would think they would want to recreate the original LP programming, and then tack on the other "leftovers" from the early recording sessions, songs like "17", or "LICK YOUR FINGERS CLEAN", or for that matter, maybe something else from that Carnegie Hall concert that took up side 3 of the original LP release. Whatever happens to this CDs availability in the future, some LPs are evergreen, and I think that way about this album. Let's hope that enough interest is shown in this title, for the record companies to rerererelease it.
