Free Music Review: ...with kitchen prose and gutter rhymes...
Hit: 5 Stars

I realize this is only one man's opinion, but I do believe Songs From the Wood is Jethro tull's finest hour. I can't think of a more cohesive, complete album by Tull (with the possible exception of Aqualung).Inspired by Ian Anderson's move to the country, the album rings with good will. Even a potentially depressing song as Velvet Green has merit. Lyrically it's depressing, musically, exciting.
Ring out, Soltice Bells is my favorite song on this album, and the fade-out with the bells ringing is beautiful. Barrie Barlow shows his stuff on these songs. What a magnificent drummer he is!!Listen to Hunting Girl and pay attention to the drumming on that particular number. It doesn't get any better than that.
The inclusion of Beltane makes perfect sense. It slots in nicely with the theme of the album. So, even if you are not a Tull fan, but are merely curious, start with SFTW as opposed to something with which you are overly familiar, such as Aqualung or Thick as a Brick. You will not be disappointed.

Free Music Review: A true milestone. One of several masterpieces by JT
Hit: 5 Stars

I find myself drawn to the memories of buying this album when I was 13. It was a mature record for me but, I was completely floored by it's incredible musicianship and the songwriting of Ian Anderson. It remains today as one of the most riveting musical experiences of my headphone years. Velvet Green, Hunting Girl, Cup Of Wonder, the title track are all incredible.
The entire CD is a tour de force for this band at the pinnacle of their powers. It was an era of "Punk" and "New Wave". If you listen deeply, you will hear a "new" Jethro Tull sound in the music here. It is a "new wave" of Tull in production and it's overall development. "Timeless" in theme and sound. Which is not something to be said about many of the bands from the revolution of the "Punk" and "New Wave" era. Songs From The Wood: Unquestionably one the finest Jethro Tull albums in their catalog. I will enjoy this music forever.

Free Music Review: Addictive!
Hit: 5 Stars

Bought this many years ago in the form of an LP. It was practically a life changing event.
Songs From the Wood is one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time. Yours is no Disgrace, Frankenstein, Riders on the Storm, and Third Stone From the Sun are other classics that rank about as highly. It is so complex, and so well done that it boggles the mind. The same joy of nature carries through the rest of the album with songs like Jack in the Green, Cup of Wonder, and Velvet Green. This version of "Ring Out Solstice Bells" is probably better than the one on the Christmas Album. The feel of the album is like celebrating in an old pub maybe in the late 18th century.
Jethro Tull is as unique and visionary a group as there ever was, and this is a landmark album for them. Ian Anderson is like some pied piper or a mythological pan leading you into different realms of the mind. Be careful, you might become addicted like me and buy all their other albums.

Free Music Review: Best Tull album...
Hit: 5 Stars

Thankfully one of their better known albums is now even better after remastering & with bonus tracks.

While most of my friends gives their opinion as "Aqualung" or "Thick as a brick" being Jethro Tull's best work. I will give my nod to this wonderful album called "Songs from the
wood". Like the name hints, this album is very much folk influenced. All the songs are good (and from the wood). The title track, Hunting girl, The whistler, Pibroch (Cup in hand), Fire at midnight are too good. Actually I should write name of all the songs. This album should have influenced a lot of artistes. I don't know whether it really had, but one thing I can write this is one of the best albums of all time. Anderson's flute never sounded so good. Tull never sounded so gentle and at the same time so creative. If you want to buy a Tull album (if not why are staring at this page) buy it. Then go for Aqualung, Crest of a knave and other amazing stuff.

Free Music Review: Their last great album?
Hit: 5 Stars

Tull was a controversial band back in the 70's. Were they a rock band at all? Were they even a prog. rock band like Yes and Floyd? Or were they something totally unclassifiable? With an enigmatic leader, Ian Anderson, they have some of the biggest hits ever, Aqualung and Locomotive Breath, both with plenty of radio play, and followed up that success with two albums that had only one song each (Thick as a Brick and A Passion Play, both which strangely became #1 albums- how is that possible?). Then in 1977, after a couple of other very successful albums, they popped out Songs From the Wood. This album rocks in a real woodsy sort of way. The title track sounds great on the remastered version, especially the vocals. Hunting Girl is a real standout too. This album stands as a musical work that will never go out of style. It is timeless and a keeper in your collection.
