Free Music Review: the Supreme Goddess of Love ...
Hit: 5 Stars

This recording is in my top ten list. I never tire of it -- I can listen to it forever. Miss Jill Scott is the poet of love l o v e LOVE dreamy intoxicating love and every song has a flavor that is unique while consistent. She captures the dreaminess EVERY TIME w/ precision and clarity.

Some may find it difficult to differentiate one song from another and I too have been guilty of mixing up "Love Rain" and "Its Love" when replaying them in my head ... and my best explanation for this is that the entire album, all songs together MESH PERFECTLY and the message is the same. A seamless novel about love and life in which no one chapter can be eliminated. They must all be heard!

The lyrics are the best ever -- symbolic and w/ purity and succinctness to capture EXACTLY the sentiment. Like "let's take a long walk ..." capturing perfectly the deep drowning letting go as you fall into the abyss of love via an otherwise seemingly trite phrase. This is her brilliance. There is nothing pretentious in her vision because she can take the ordinary and transpose it into genius.

"Building sandcastles in the Serengheti" is a pristine example of a phrase that is simple yet captures the grandness. Then add to this the WAY she enunciates and punctuates each and every syllable. The phrases that one simply cannot ever forget because they become a mantra day in day out, some soft as rain and others, "wildly s t a c c a t o".

Jill Scott's emoting is as good as it gets. No one does it better. No one! She is also intensely knowing -- if you are not wanting to belt out each word of every line, you are missing it. One can simply FEEL the experience she relates. You've either been there and lived it or you can transport yourself there.

Every girl in the world should keep "One is the Magic Number" as her anthem. And every woman in the world should remember "Slowly Surely" so that she never ever gives up on love.

Jill Scott is in one moment the innocent child whispering and breathless or the savvy sultry diva as powerful as Diane Schurr or Aretha or Shemekia Copeland ... she is a bedroom vixen, a wide-eyed young girl savoring the magic of the world, or an observer in the city -- no matter what this woman expresses, it is a sweet sincere exquisite confection.

Free Music Review: REPRESENTING NORTH PHILLY WITH MAD FLAVA!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I had heard the buzz about this musicalingenue round and about the "Big Apple" but unfortunately wasn't able to attend any of her live performances while she was in town.Well I caught her on the Chris Rock show where she TORE IT UP!!Jill Scott is one of the most talented youngster to come out in quite some time. What I appreciate about Miss Scott is that her image is quite frankly no image at all.Jill gives you HER and it's about darn time that a sister can be confident in her talent and her heart to just say,"This here is me take or leave it!" The album from beginning to end is realness and hit after hit.DJ Jazzy Jeff(formerly of Fresh Prince(Will Smith) fame and production squad do justice to the lyrics and the amazing voice that is Jill Scott. There are so many lush and lovely ditties on this cd. One that come to mind is a little "vingette" called I THINK IT'S BETTER.It's short but potent none the less, here Jill is struggling to tell her former lover that she has moved on and found perfected peace with someone else. You feel the pain in Jill's voice as it pains her to say goodbye to yesterday love and this girl is so excellent at interpretation that you will feel equally sorry for the brother that she is "dumping".Another hit is HE LOVES ME which really explains what a good love can do for a sister when a good man is involved. Scott really gets down to the nitty gritty and tells what it is about her "boo" that makes her so head over heels in love. After you hear this song with Scott showing her operatic riffs, you will be asking,"Dang! Does this cat have a brother?!" Now for a treat there are hidden tracks(#44 TRY AGAIN)James Poyser who is the baddest producer in my opinion laid this track and Jill grooves to it.ONE IS THE MAGIC NUMBER gives you a latin romp as Jill gets mathematical and self-introspective realizing that there's just her and her alone that she must perfect and deal with. All and all this is the best debut album of the year 2000 and it is worthy of nomination for Best New Artist Category for the Grammys.Yes!! IT'S THAT GOOD!!Jill...I certainly don't expect you to stay the same but my Sister, stay the way YOU ARE!!! Much respect and MAD LOVE!! P.S. Does Lyzel have a brother?!Girl I want some of what you got! Peace!

Free Music Review: Who Is Jill Scott?--The Leading Voice in R&B and Soul!
Hit: 5 Stars

Jill Scott a.k.a. Jilly from Philly introduces herself to the world with this amazingly addictive album. It is a voyage from beginning to end. Jill comes raw and fresh and has a different sound than the other Soul and R&B artists of our time.

Jilltro - Nice interlude with a slick name. She is introducing herself to the world. (9/10)

Do You Remember - Sweet song with Jill singing of memories of her and a boy from childhood. (8/10)

Exclusively - A nice poetic interlude about Jill going to the store after hot sex and meeting a "cute" cashier lady. (9/10)

Gettin' In The Way - Jill portrays a woman who wants to whoop another woman's behind because she is interfering with their relationship. (10/10)

A Long Walk - Beautiful song about Jill and her man doing things together all day long. (10/10)

I Think It's Better - What can I say? It's an interlude.

He Loves Me (Lyzel in E Flat) - Jill is singing about her man Lyzel in this song. This is one of the most touching songs on the CD. (10/10)

It's Love - A feel good song to get your spirits up. Love, love, love, love, love, love :) (9/10)

The Way - A nice song with very well written lyrics. I always sing-a-long with this one. (9/10)

Honey Molasses - Sweet song that seems like a really long interlude because there isn't a main chorus or anything. It's so sexy and seductive.

Love Rain - Nice slow song with poetic vocals. (8/10)

The Roots (Interlude) - Excerpt from You Got Me by The Roots....J-I-L-L S-C-O-T-T. (5/10)

Slowly Surely - Seems like it repeats itself. It's a nice smooth ballad though. (7/10)

One Is The Magic # - Nice Spanish horns track. Jill mixes her culture here. (10/10)

Watching Me - A poetic song about people and things watching her. (5/10)

Brotha - A tribute to her black brother. (10/10)

Show Me - Smooth mellow track to kick back and groove to with your lover. (10/10)

Try/Love Rain Remix [Hidden Track]- Nice songs. Add to albums rich sound. (8/10) & (10/10)

Jill Scott definitely proves she is here to stay around. This is a MUST HAVE album.

Free Music Review: PASS THE CROWN TO JILL...
Hit: 5 Stars

Jill Scott's new CD is so beautiful, poetic, and soulful itwill bring tears to your eyes. She completely reveals herself, heartand soul, in a manner that is unprecedented in "so called R&B" today. There are NO 1/2 stepping remakes of Chaka Kahn songs or wispy, scratchy vocals stemming from repetitive "he loved me/ left me/don't pay my bills" lyrics. Jill rawly and passionately expresses her need and desire for Emotional, Spiritual, and Physical, don't mess with my man ("you better back down/before you get smacked down"), LOVE for herself and Community LOVE for her people. For my sistas, her songs and lyrical poems about love and the brothas that she's been involved with will have you reminiscing with both joy and pain, laughter and tears, over every man that you ever loved from your father to your brother to your 7th grade crush to your prince that will someday (or hopefully already has) come. And for the brothas, the emotion and beauty of her voice will inspire you tell the woman in your life how much you love and appreciate her, or if you are "single", inspire you to believe that beautiful, passionate, soulful, spiritual black women like Jill REALLY DO EXIST. The poetry she speaks over her vocals are reminiscent of Sonia Sanchez and Nikki Giovanni, her vocals a combination of the styles of Erykah Badu & N'dea Davenport, the funk & soul of Chaka Kahn and the lyrical beauty & delivery of Sarah Vaughn. And as for her collaboration with Mos Def, well there really are no words to describe it. On my favorite cut track #8, "It's Love" She asks a brother whom she has a SHAMELESS LOVE JONES for, how he wants HER LOVE by asking: "Do you want it on your bisucuits baby, do you want it on your rice and gravy?/do you want it in your black-eyed peas?/do you want it on your collard greens?/do you want it in your candied sweets?/do you want it on your pickled beets?..." (all this complete with jazzy scatting and african drum beats) Her CD is a true musical experience and not only does she deserve a grammy nomination for best new artist, but it is time for Erykah, Macy and Lauryn to PASS ON THE CROWN(S)... Preach on Girl....

Free Music Review: Philly's Queen Reigns Supreme!
Hit: 5 Stars

The Roots and Will Smith have made Philly a word spoken from the mouths of all people enterested in entertainment, but now it is time to make room for PHILLY'S QUEEN AS SHE REIGNS SUPREME! I orginally heard about Jill from Grenique when I was doing background for her last year. I was afforded the opportunity to meet her last year in DC as she honored MJB at a Sister-2-Sister luncheon with her poetry. At that time, I wasn't aware that the sistah could give so much of herself. Her poetry was NO DOUBT on point, but when added to music it comes to life. Such is the case with her debut. I listen to it everyday (along with Amel, N'Dambi, Karen Bernod, Rahsaan Patterson, Grenique, Yolanda Adams & Kim Burrell). Its soothing AND REAL. Sistah-girl (as Jill would state it) is off-da-heezy-fo-sheezy! With soulful/spiritual/emotional/heart-felt/True-2-Life songs like "Long Walk", "Honey, Molasses" & "Remember Me", a DC Go-Go jam, and poetic songs like "Slowly Surely", I can't help but slowly enjoy every melody/lyric/poem/feeling as I surely play it day after day after day after day.

And for those of you reviewed this albulm and feel the production should have been much more, I have to disagree with you. The production is fine. Not too much and no-where near too little. I think one of the problems with R&B/Soul music today is the fact that we put so much emphasis on production that we tend to let it overshadow the lyrics of the song and the voice of the singer. The bottom line has always been THE SINGER, THE VOICE, THE MELODY & THE LYRICS, but lately we've been so engulfed with production (and producers) that we (music buyers & RADIO) allow that to determine how HOT a song is. As my mamma used to say, "If you can't sing without music or just you and a piano, I don't wanna hear you sing at all." I want to feel the full effect of the song and I can't get that if there is too much production....

I just pray that God continues to touch Jill to bless us with all that she has within..

Peace, Love, Blessings & Universal Enlightenment
