Free Music Notes for Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds, Vol. 1

Free Music Review: Mind Blowing
Hit: 5 Stars

What else can I say, but to agree with you all. I first became aware of Jill Scott when I saw her perform on the Chris Rock Show. I was blown away then as I am now. Then I had the absolute pleasure of seeing her in concert in January at the Meyerhoff in Baltimore, MD. Let me just say that, this concert going experience ranks as the best that I have ever experienced. I have seen Tina Turner twice as well as Erykah Badu, D'Angelo and others in concet and there is no comparison. I have never heard anyone who sounds better live than on her CD and I love the CD. It ranks as one of my all time favorite behind Bob Marley's Legend. I never wanted the concert to end. Talk about stage present. She interacts with the audience and makes you feel as if she is singing just for you. If you can see her in concert, run, beg, bribe whoever you have to, you will be thanking me later.

Anyways, let me get back to the CD. I love it. I listen to this CD from beginning to end on a regular basis. I love all the tracks. Jilly from Philly has outdone her self. I pray that her follow up is as beautiful as Volume I. Can't wait to find out, but I am still content just listening to this CD. Because of her and others like Erykah, India Irie, D'Angelo, Sade, I still feel hopeful about R&B. She is truly an inspiration as a musican and as a woman. I hope our litte girls can be inspired by her as I have been. As you can see, I am a fan for life.

Free Music Review: Best Album of the Year 2000
Hit: 5 Stars

You know Jill Scott. As soon as you hear her voice, you know her. She's that down-to-earth, funny, smart woman-friend who's tough enough when she needs to be. Her debut album is an astonishing amalgam of spoken word and bohemian jazzbo free flowing melody sung with uncommon grace and finesse. Jill Scott would be a perfect fit for that coffee house hangout in "Love Jones" and would be standing room only in Dwayne Wiggins' jammin' Java House. Her songs detail the inner life of a young woman right here and now in the year 2000, from love to politics, and she presents a clear and bright portrait of Urban Everywoman. Not only is her point of view attractive, the woman can sang! She has at least four voices I can hear, ranging from girlish, slight and sweet to full-figured, sassy and brassy to street to almost Broadway. Egyptian and Middle Eastern influences weave in and out of these truly amazing songs. I have turned so many people on to this CD, and everyone loves it. I even had tickets to see Scott perform live at Bimbo's in San Francisco and was unable to attend, to my dismay. My feelings of loss were corroborated a couple of weeks later at a car wash on 40th in Oakland, when the gold-dred brotha washing his car in the stall next to me and blasting Miss Jill assured me that I had missed the One Show. Next time...This is, hands down, my pick for the best album of the year 2000.

Free Music Review: Dreamin'
Hit: 5 Stars

I first heard of Jill Scott from her contribution to the "In Too Deep" OST, and her track called "Dreamin". It would definately be fair to say that I fell in love with it right away - it's such a beautiful song, really laid back and jazzy; so I guess I became a Jill Scott fan from there.

I hadn't heard anything from her since I saw her album in the stores about 6 months later, and picked it up. Woah! It really was what I'd hoped it would be.

Y'see, Over the past couple of years, I've kinda been looking at diversing my musical tastes and in an attempt at breaking away from the (sometimes) superficial but lovable "Oooh baby, do it to me" sounds of rnb, have ventured into the musical stylings of artists like D'Angelo, Carl Thomas, Maxwell, Chantay Savage, Eric Benet, A Tribe Called Quest, Guru ("Jazzmatazz") to mention just a few. And it must be said that Jill Scott fits firmly into that category.

Her unique blend of jazz, blues, rnb, hip hop and soul bestowed upon her by (DJ Jazzy) Jeff Townes and his production crew will remain a classic for years to come.

My only hope is that someone who knows nothing about Jill Scott will read this review, and be inspired to purchase her "Words and Sounds".

PS. I was particularly happy to see Jazzy Jeff step out on his own and hit the music world so hard. Keep on keepin' on!

Free Music Review: Soul Sister No. 1
Hit: 5 Stars

Let's just put it this way, YOU HAVE TO BUY THIS CD!!!!! It is not only the best cd of 2001 but it is bound to become a classic.

A friend of mine recommened that I pick this cd up awhile back. I heard of Jill Scott because of a few of her guest apperances on other albums. So I thought why not. Well I was blown away the minute the cd started playing. This soul sister can blow. I listened to the whole album from start to finish and then played it agian. You will have this in your cd changer for awhile, trust me.

This album brings back an era when people "sang" about love, pain and happiness not just about having sex or getting over on someone. When you hear Jill sing you will remember every love and heartbreak you've ever had. "He Loves Me" is a truly beautiful song about real love. With every note you feel what she is saying. You can close your eyes and images of happy love affiars dance across your mind. "Love Rain" will bring you back to that romance that was a little one sided. But still sweet and romantic, you're first grown up crush. And "Slowly Surely" is the greatest break up song(as break up songs go). It evokes such pain and sorrow, yet fills you with hope that things will all get better at the same time.

Like I said before this is a must have album. There is something on here for everyone. Trust me you can't go wrong with Jill Scott.
