Free Music Notes for Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds, Vol. 1Free Music Review: an instant classic Hit: 5 Stars
although i try refrain from using superlatives, jill scott's debut album is truly perfection. i do not forward through any songs on this album. she is an amazing artist, with songs the speak of deep personal experiences, mostly love, and not of "pimpin'..." and money and cars, etc. she neither oversings nor gets lost in her music, and the soul and wisdom in her voice and words transcend her youth. it's refreshing to see an r&b/neo-soul wonder like jill scott in this era of blah pop-music and played out, boring r&b artists (i.e. kelly price, r. kelly, sisqo). it's also great to see jill scott is getting the popular and critical acclaim that she deserves.personal favorites include: "exclusively" -- a beautiful spoken word piece with an ironic twist on fidelity, or should i say infidelity "gettin' in the way" -- jill scott getting ready to give the "smack down" on some girl trying to mess with her man "a long walk" -- my absolute favorite song on the album; great jazz/soul vibe "love rain" -- another great song/spoken word piece on the pain of unrequited love (also remixed with mos def) "slowly surely" -- great beat, of course great writing, showcases her strength in leaving an unloving relationship "try" -- another great beat and a positive message
Free Music Review: Who is she? She is a blessing to true r&b/soul music lovers Hit: 5 Stars
Prior to purchasing this album, I had a very lengthy hiatus from buying music. I was disappointed, perplexed about where I fit in as a patron of music considering the type of songs that smothered urban radio, and I reached a point where the only music that soothed me was from a generation above and beyond my time. Then, out of the blue, I heard Jill Scott. When I heard Jill Scott on the radio, my interest and curiosity led me to purchase her debut album, but with reservation due to how I felt about the R&B scene in 2000. I found that I played this album more than any other album in 2001, and Jill Scott's artistry and craft restored my faith in R&B. Even though it is now 2003, and this album was released in 2000, I am writing this review now because the question no longer is "Who is Jill Scott?" but "Where is Jill Scott"? I still play this album on a consistent basis because in my opinion the fusion of spoken word poetry, jazz, soul, and beautifully written, honest, confident, original, sensual, inspiring, and refreshing lyrics are above and beyond the over-hyped flavor of the month and "look good in a video while you're at it" music so widely accepted within popular culture. Jill Scott is in a class by herself, and is truly an artist with a craft that brings beauty to our lives. Can't wait until her next release.
Free Music Review: Best album of 2000. Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this record a few months ago after hearing her version of "You Got Me" (she co-wrote it) on the Roots live album. After a half-hearted listen or two, I shelved it for awhile because I had a ton of other new music at the time. After a month or so, I picked it back up and it has surpassed D'Angelo's "Voodoo" as the album of the year for me.Her poetic style puts you under a spell, occasionally you come up from it wondering if you've been listening to music, or something much deeper. If you like this style of music, I recommend Musiq Soulchild (same producer), The Roots (also from Philly), and D'Angelo. Much like my all-time favorite record (last year's "Bitter" by Me'Shell NdegéOcello), Ms. Scott's album reminds you that you aren't the only one that feels that way about the important things in life (unlike the fluff you hear on the radio today.) If you already have this album, and are dying for more of Jill, don't hesitate to run out and pick up Common's "Like Water For Chocolate" (she performs on "Funky For You" with Bilal), and the "Wild Wild West" soundtrack for the "8 Minutes 'Til Sunrise" duet with Common, as well as the previously mentioned live Roots album. I've heard her live show is just as incredible (4 out of 4 stars in today's USA Today.)
Free Music Review: we need more stars for this one . . . Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this cd when it first came out almost four years ago, and I still listen to it at least two or three times a week. It's just beautiful on all levels. In my opinion, it stands completely alone as far as r&b music goes, especially when it comes to TODAY'S r&b. Her music fails to explore the world of baby-daddies, acrylic nails, meaningless sex, and the plethora of other negative stereotypes that are being perpetuated by most black artists about black folk these days. I really couldn't stand most r&b at the time that I bought "Words...". I was disgusted (and still am) by the state that black music was in. I saw the "Gettin' in the Way" video one day, ran out to buy the cd, and the rest is history. I think it's safe to say that this is my favorite cd, and if not, then it's my favorite r&b cd. I hate that "neo-soul" label that Jill is put in. It's rhthym and blues to most, soul to many, but there's nothing "neo/new" about these thoughtful artists that fall into this category, they're just being ignored. Anyway, let me get off my soapbox. I love the entire cd, but some of my favorite tracks are:"The Way" "Exclusively" "A Long Walk" "Show Me" "Brotha" "Love Rain" (w/ mos def) "One is the Magic #" If you don't already have this cd, you're definitely slackin'. Buy it. NOW.
Free Music Review: Let this SISTAH's Powerful Poetic Vibes soothe ya! Hit: 5 Stars
As a fellow poet and songstress, I can appreciate the wonderful beautiful vibes of "Who is Jill Scott?" For weeks leading up to her release I had been hearing the buzz. Then her cut, "Gettin' In the Way" dropped and it was like something special just dropped out of the sky. I love the sweet, beautiful, powerful vibes Jill Scott drops on us. The CD was given to me as a gift by a fellow sistah and I must say this is a MUST HAVE CD. If you love romantic and thought-provoking songs, you must get this CD. I love, "He Loves Me." It's a beautiful song that describes the way a sistah's is expressing to her man how powerful his love makes her feel. And I'm feeling that vibe. Other powerful cuts are "Love Rain", "Slowly Surely," and"Show Me." I love the whole CD. I absolutely love the hidden track, Love Rain and I try (last cut on the album). What's so wonderful about this CD is that you get the feeling of the power of love of self, and of others. I especially like the way she challenges us - Black folks to support each other and for our brothas to hold their heads up. This CD is a must have in your collection. The tight engineering by A Touch of Jazz is another asset to this wonderful poetree that is definitely in motion.
