Free Music Notes for Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds, Vol. 1

Free Music Review: Real soul music by the best R&B singer/songwriter around...
Hit: 5 Stars

At a time when R&B music offers more sampling, pop crossover appeal, & 17-year-old hotties than singers and musicians with abundant talent and something important to say, Jill Scott is a refresing, satisfying musical meal of rhythmic, soothing melodies & poetic lyrics. Don't get me wrong-I enjoy the catchy pop/R&B songs played over & over by Puffy, Destiny's Child & the like, but sometimes you want to listen to something a little less one-dimensional than the "pay my bills," "bling bling," & "let me see that thong" themes bluntly woven through contemporary R&B music. Jill Scott is our modern day Billie Holliday-her "words and sounds" are honest, emotional, and truly hypnotizing. This is the kind of CD you want to wrap yourself in at the end of a long day--it's soul music at it's best: soothing, inspiring, moving, and sensual. And Ms. Scott is not just for grown folks-case in point: My husband & I have been putting our 7-month-old daughter to sleep by this CD every day since she was born & it's still her favorite. This CD has a permanent spot in our CD player among our other favorite soul standouts like The Brand New Heavies, Mint Condition, Rahsaan Patterson, The Jazzyfatnastees, Amel Larrieux, and Tony Toni Tone.

Free Music Review: I would give this 10 stars if I could
Hit: 5 Stars

Amazing...Incredible...Flawless--These are the only words I can think of that come even close to describing the quality and impact of this cd. Jill Scott is unbelieveably talented. Never have I heard a style of singing and composing like hers. Her songs are so poetic and meaningful. It is such a breath of fresh air compared to the tired and formulaic R&B being played all over the radio these days. Every song on this cd is wonderful, and deeply personal. I am continually amazed at how much I continue to get out of this cd each time I listen to it. Her bright and fun-loving personality shines through on tracks such as Exclusively, One is the magic number, watching me, and it's love. Although I love every single song on this album, if i had to pick my favorites, I would choose A Long Walk and Lyzel in E-Flat (He Loves Me). A long walk is simply amazing, and describes exactly how I'd want a relationship to be. And Lyzel in E-Flat is wonderful--beautiful melodies and the lyrics! Well let's just say I wish someone loved me like the subject of this song does!! Basically I could go on and on about this cd, but all I can tell you is that you really should experience it for yourself! So go and buy it now!!! you will not regret this!!

Free Music Review: In my top 5 albums of the year
Hit: 5 Stars

This is un-arguably one of the best R&B records out right now. Not merely content to stay away from "negative" or smarmy lyrical content, Ms. Scott smashes convention and gives us a record to care about. It's a smooth, summertime-jamming record, and the tracks are VERY new-Philly sound (The Roots, JazzyFatNastees).

THE SCORECARD: It's better and more mature than JazzyFatNastees (and I LIKE them). It's more consistently good than D'Angelo's 2nd album. It's neck-in-neck with Amel Larrieux' "Infinite Possibilities", but is probably a better purchase due to the sheer number of whole-album/great tracks compared to "Infinite" (Scott 18, Larrieux 10). Has all of the funk that Maxwell's 2nd record didn't. Sounds like the Roots produced her (but they didn't). Her poetry-with-music flow puts the Phat Cat Players record to shame. It's better than Badu's next record (out this year sometime) is going to be...guaranteed.

STAND-OUT TRACKS: Well, the whole record (seriously), but specifically: #4 Gettin' In The Way #5 A Long Walk #8 It's Love #10 Honey Molasses #11 Love Rain #13 Slowly Surely #17 Show Me

Get this record YESTERDAY. I don't give out 5's often, and this one easily earned it.

Free Music Review: A Benchmark of Contemporary R&B
Hit: 5 Stars

Jill Scott has with her debut album set herself apart in the world of R&B. She has set a benchmark for contemporary R&B that all those that follow will be hard pressed to equal. The adjectives required to praise this album have not been created yet.... Awesome, beautiful, innovative, powerful, genius, outstanding, soulful, jazzy, great, poetic, sultry, erotic, haunting, spiritual, impressive, etc.. etc.. just don't convey the with any meaning the true experience of this album.

This album is simply a 'force'. Rarely in musical history does an recording of such definition present itself. That it is the debut album for this artist just makes its refinement even more impressive. This album holds it own against many of the greatest R&B albums every produced -- "Songs in the Key of Life", "What's Going On" etc..

The paranoia of "Watching Me"; the overtly sexual 'overtones' (LOL) of "Honey Molasses"; the 'in-your-face, here I am' of "Gettin' in the Way"; the sultry, haunting tones of "Slowly Surely" and on and on and on!

This recording is a NECESSITY for any true fan of R&B.

Hell... I think I may be in love! (my wife won't like that :D)

Free Music Review: One of the hottest new artist in 2K
Hit: 5 Stars

The underground doesn't seem to be so far out of reach. Artist like Ericka Badu, Macy Gray and Amel Larrieux have taken underground soul to a new level in main stream radio play. Now comes a new vibe to add to the soulful pot of stew these underground kats have been brewing for years. It really doesn't matter to me if she hits radio air waves or not, I'll play it until the laser from my CD player burns a hole through it. I just got the CD today (thanks to Amazon for letting me get it on the day of it's release) and already picked up a second copy for my collection at work. Her voice is amazing and very easy to the ears. No fake altered, studio mastered voice here. In my opion, this girl can blow with the best of them. I've heard other songs she has done in the past as well as background vocals she has done on big names artist like "Will Smith" and "Mos Def". I'm telling you kats! The underground scene is where the real artist are and Jill Scott along with names like Julie Dexter, Jazzyfatnastees, N'Dambi and countless others have me turning my radio dail to the far left for the college underground stations for real music. You just gotta get this one!
