Free Music Notes for Love Songs & LullabiesFree Music Review: A nugget of peace in a world of rage Hit: 4 Stars
Young Brickman shines wonderfully, as usual, on this his 8th record release. Piano is one of the most beautiful, perhaps most underrated instruments around, yet Brickman uses it like a personal muse, shaming his heavy-handed contemporaries who feel the need to obliterate their raunchy instruments, in order to come across to their audience. Not Brickman, though. Like a calm beach on a day in paradise, Brickman's melodies will sooth, relax, and even numb your senses. Nonetheless, numerous death-metal bands out there are currently seeking a talented keyboardist - get out there and audition, Jim!! What could it hurt?? Whatever the case, young Jim Brickman, or "JB" as he's known by his hardcore groupies, has the sentimentality of Billy Joel, the talent of Elton John, and the patience of Randy Newman. What he lacks is a little soul - a Ray Charles vibe that might get the moshers at his concerts to up the energy level some. Still, his overall dedication and talent are both indisputable characteristics to his music. For truth in piano, BUY BRICKMAN!! HAVE FUN WITH IT!!! PEACE!
Free Music Review: Great solos as usual, weak vocal tracks Hit: 4 Stars
Jim Brickman shows his talent again in the 8 instrumental tracks. They are truly wonderful to listen to.However, the vocal tracks by All-4-One and Jane Krakowski are lacking. This was probably because they had to tone down the songs to better fit with the rest of the album. The good news is there are better versions of these songs out there. In All-4-One's A41 album, you'll find a version of Beautiful (As U) that is much more suited for the group's R&B style. As for the song, You, you'll find a more upbeat and much better sung version by Tara MacLean as a bonus track on Jim's last album, Simple Things (which is a more upbeat album). Tara MacLean is lesser known than Actress Jane Krakowski, but is a very accomplished vocalist. It's too bad that Jim has decided to ride the celebrity of Krakowski by releasing her version for radio play, rather than choosing the version by a real vocalist. Tara's version has been doing extremely well in radio play here in Canada.
Free Music Review: Pretty darn good! Hit: 4 Stars
While the music in this collection is not as inspiring as his last album SIMPLE THINGS, I still found this one very relaxing, emotional and done with the flow that he is so good at! My only complaint was that I wish he would have had one or two more songs with vocals since they add so much to his songs!!! But, his piano playing is just incredible and he makes it look so easy! Way to go Jim! Jane Krakowski has an awesome voice also!
Free Music Review: Can't always have perfection: 3-1/2 stars Hit: 3 Stars
Several days ago, I was excited to find that Jim had a new CD out: Love Songs & Lullabies. Woo-hoo! My first play in the car, rather than coming home, was like opening the door and finding that I had gone to someone else's house. Where is the passion? I've listened to it a bunch of times since then, and I'm growing to like this CD, but it's not Destiny. It plays much better on a stereo than in the car. Love Never Fails is...nice, but flat compared to It Must Be You (Simple Things). I See the Moon (traditional lyrics)gave me nightmares, running endlessly through my head in my dreams (when was the last time THAT happened?). I was hoping that A Mother's Day was a freak accident, but it's b-a-c-k, even if it is slightly more tolerable. This time as Beautiful, which All-4-One is unable to save. I like sappy lyrics, but these are really heavy-handed: "...I've seen rainbows that could take your breath away The beauty of the setting sun on any given day And when it comes to shooting stars I have seen a few, but I've never seen anything as beautiful as you" Cough! Ack! Get that fur-ball up! Jim Brickman has crossed the line from sweet and romantic to saccharine. I guess it was bound to happen. Look what happened to George Winston. The best vocal on this CD is the last: You. This song has the feel of the songs on Simple Things, and I imagine it would be great in a Disney movie. The lyrics are sweet, not sickly...or is it the great performance by Jane Krakowski? The best songs on this CD are the instrumentals, which do hearken back to his earlier effort, By Heart (go Jim!). Simple instrumentation. They make the CD worth having, but they are not Brickman's heart-wrenching best work. Maybe I need to listen a few more times. If you are new to Jim Brickman, get Destiny instead. For only 38 minutes of music, unless you are a die-hard Jim Brickman fan, I'd say to wait until you can get a used copy for cheap. That said, I'm still going to his show when he's in town. Love-ya, Brick', but a bit more next time, okay? Can't wait.
Free Music Review: 31/2 stars, kind of pricey for the length Hit: 3 Stars
Being just under 38 minutes long surprised me, with what CD's cost I wanted a few more songs. I don't mind similarities in songs but like another reviewer I too noticed the similar sound of little star with his earlier release. Of the songs that had singing accompanying the music I thought that #12 You, with Jane Krakowski was perhaps the best, followed by #7 I see the moon (Brickman himslef sings on that one) and #10 Beautiful with All4one. #3 Love never fails, with Amy Sky was the worst of these in my opinion. I'm not sure about her singing but the music was too fancy, too much stuff in it that kind of covered her up and the piano.
