Free Music Notes for Grease: A New 50's Rock 'N Roll Musical - The Original Broadway Cast AlbumFree Music Review: A remake will always be a remake Hit: 5 Stars
I made a copy of the original vinyl album on reel-to-reel tape in 1975, when a friend brought it back to Denmark after at visit to New York. This copy has followed me ever since (now on a rather worn cassette-tape) and I have always found this edition of the musical to be more true, raw, fresh, fifties-like and FUN, than the more mainstream movie version.
I guess those who argue that the performers on this recording are not top notch, may be right, but I fall for the gusto and enthusiasm on display here. Not that I don't like the movie version, but compared to the original, the movie is more polished and pleasing, and perhaps also dull. Having found the original on CD, I can't wait to lay my hands on it, so I can finally put the old cassette to rest.
Free Music Review: Grease rules! Hit: 5 Stars
This CD is the origanal Broadway cast which means NOT the movie with Olivia Newton John. There is many familiar songs from the movie like: "Summer Nights" "Those Magic changes" (only it starts out "cccccc aaaa minor ffffff gggg seventh"because in th musical this song is right after summer nights taking place in a hallway) "Look at me im sandra dee "There are worse things I could do" and many others and the alma mater is played in the movie just without words alma mater parody is the greasers making fun of the alma mater thats my favorite song"I saw a dead skunk on the highway and I was going crazy from the smell..." It's a wonderful CD for broadway lovers and Grease fans alike.
Free Music Review: The Broadway Original Hit: 5 Stars
The original Broadway version of Grease is much different that the movie version. The chief difference is that the biggest hits from the movie, the title song, "You're The One That I One Want" & "Hopelessly Devoted To You", were written specifically for the movie and do not appear here. The play also had a harder edge to it, taking place in an urban environment and was more explicit. Fans of the movie will recognize songs like "Greased Lightnin'", "Summer Nights", "Beauty School Dropout", "Born To Hand Jive" and "We Go Together" but other standouts include "All Choked Up", "Those Magic Changes" & "Freddy My Love".
Free Music Review: Great, missing just one song Hit: 5 Stars
This is a great soundtrack, ideal for those wishing to replace old LP's or those putting on the Broadway version in their high school. Grease buffs will also love it. Just one word of warning to those in the high school category. Obtaining the music from French's library will give you a song not on this album: Shakin' at the High School Hop. However, I've found this song on Napster in a slightly different form. Apparently, when people put that song on napster, they appended the number 18 to the title, which is ironic because this album only has 17 tracks on it. Take from that what you will...but it is a great album nonetheless and worth it to those who want to hear Grease as it was supposed to sound.
Free Music Review: This is the REAL Grease. Hit: 5 Stars
Grease, here in its original form, is an adventurous, raw, rowdy, INSIGHTFUL show that paints a very accurate picture of a pivotal moment in American history when rock and roll was giving birth to the Sexual Revolution. Grease is not a silly, brainless 50s parody, but is instead a smart, insightful, alternative piece of theatre (inspired in many ways by HAIR), with real muscle, attitude, rawness, and a thrilling, subversive, over-sexed energy. If you want to hear what Grease SHOULD sound like, if you want to hear the real sound of early rock and roll, get this original 1972 recording. Forget the awful revival, and forget the movie (as fun as it may be) -- THIS is Grease. [...]
