Free Music Notes for The Jimi Hendrix ExperienceFree Music Review: The whole Hendrix Hit: 5 StarsThe Hendrix you see and hear out there is the hip flashy showman which everyone knows is completely awe-inspiring, but the collection of music in this box set allows you to look a little further. Sure, sure, all Along the Watchtower, Purple Haze, Fire all blow us away (well whoever isn't surely has got a problem no one can cure), but the real gems, and my personal favorites, are the ones that show a side of the man that no one talks too much about. The bluesman, the (gasp! dare I say it?) perceptive pop sounds, the funk and soul grooves. Yes, my favorites are the ones that are quiet and melodic, like Slow Blues and Cherokee Mist. In those, they are like the past and future colliding (and he truly was in many ways ahead of his time), the dirt of the earth and lofty gases of the heavens all combined to create truly heartstopping music. Where he came up with sounds that were just so otherworldly, one can only speculate and just for those precious heavenly tracks alone they are certainly worth a few earthly paper bills.
Free Music Review: A Great Box-Set! Hit: 5 StarsThe Jimi Hendrix Experience Box-Set inlcudes outtakes, live recordings, and alternate recordings. This entire box-set is unreleased music spanning through 67-70. This is truely a must have for Jimi Hendrix collectors including a great 80 page booklet, and over 46 unreleased recordings. The live performences are great as well on all four disc's including on disc one Like A Rolling Stone, disc two Burning Of The Midnight Light, disc three Voodoo Chile(slight return), disc four All Along The Watchtower. The sound quality is the best part about this box-set all remastered by Eddie Kramer from Electric Ladyland studio. You cant go wrong with a great box-set including mostly unreleased recordings, and unreleased live recordings. Enjoy! ~
Free Music Review: Hendrix for even those who aren't fans Hit: 5 StarsThis box set should be the one to get even if you don't like Hendrix because the reason you do not like him is you've probably only heard a handful of his most well-known recordings. I, as a huge fan, am even tired of hearing the Jimi Hendrix "radio songs" that are extremely overplayed on all the classic rock stations. Actually, I suggest getting this rather than any of the studio albums because many of the tracks are un-released, raw, and just amazing. There are a few tracks that were recorded live, some as sound check jams, and some unreleased studio stuff. I love the jam session songs because it shows just how talented Jimi was by showing his ability to improvise without any structured framework around the music.
An excellent set and put together extremely well.
Free Music Review: Its great despite some filler Hit: 5 StarsYes this is a great collection, it contains some SMOKING live material and studio rehearsals but contains some filler on the first disc. The set starts with a previously unreleased version of Purple Haze. And there's a reason it was unreleased: its a bad take! Hendrix fudges one of the guitar lines. Likewise Foxy Lady. During Hey Joe Hendrix laughs about how the headphones are too loud. 3rd Stone begins with Hendrix and Eddie Kramer cutting up during the vocal overdubs. Hey its in good fun and the take of the song is different (but inferior) to the one on Are You Experienced? "Burning of the Midnight Lamp" is kinda cool as we hear Hendrix overdubbing the harpsichord part. None of this stuff is essential but it is fun to hear the studio chatter and mistakes, at least for me. The previously unreleased versions of the other studio cuts on the 1st CD are pretty cool though. Lover Man is taken as an instrumental and is killer. The live versions of Killing Floor, Hey Joe, Rock Me Baby and Like a Rolling Stone are essential. So they padded the 1st CD a bit: Highway Chile was released on the extended version of "Are You Experienced?", its OK in lieu of what else is on this 4 CD box set.
The rest of the collection is fantastic: there are incredible live versions of Hendrix classics, rehearsal tapes of the band live in the studio (the version of Spanish Castle Magic is amazing) and unreleased tracks. There are some true gems on this collection. Its very worthwhile for the less than obssesive Hendrix fan. The obsessive Hendrix collector is going to have most of this stuff in other forms, but for everybody else there's enough new stuff to make it very interesting and the packaging is quite good. I consider myself to be a Hendrix fanatic and I did have a lot of this stuff on crappy, scratched vinyl bootlegs and inferior CDs so I was very happy to get this material sounding as good as it does in a new, well thought out CD boxed set. Despite the filler on the first CD, this collection is definitely worth having for any Hendrix fan.
Free Music Review: The Jimi Hendrix Experience {BOX SET} Hit: 5 StarsThe Jimi Hendrix bookset contains four CD's of all unreleased tracks spanning from 1967 to 1970. This is truely the best box set that was ever released including an 80 page booklet with many rare photos of hendrix live, and in the studio. Highlights from the first disc contain Unreleased Recordings like Purple Haze, Foxy lady, Highway Chile, Burning Of The Midnight Lamp, and Like A Rolling Stone Live at The Monterey International Pop Festival, June 18, 1967. Highlights from the disc two include Bold As Love, Sweet Angel, Fire Live at Clark University, Gypsy Eyes, and Gloria. The third disc gets into latter recordings of Hendrix including Stone Free, Spanish Castle Magic, Little Wing, Voodoo Chile(slight return) Live at the Royal Albert Hall 1969, and Izabella.Highlights from the fourth disc include Freedom, Johnny B. Goode Live at Berkeley 1970, Blue Suede Shoes Live at Berkley 1970, Hey Baby/In From The Storm live at Maui, 1970. Ezy Rider very cool version, Night Bird Flying, All Along The Watchtower live at The Isle Of Wight 1970, and In From The Storm. And the last track is the last song Hendrix recorded in the studio titled Slow Blues very rare. This box set is truely an experience I love to listen expesically to the live performences where hendrix just gives you an truely amazing performence. The studio versions are even funner to listen to this box set is worth the money buy this and be experienced. Highly Recomended!
