Free Music Review: The Ultimate Way to Experience Jimi Hendrix
Hit: 5 Stars

Jimi Hendrix is one of the greatest artists and guitar players of all time. Ok, now with that said, on with the review. Jimi Hendrix has gone through some major re-issues over and over again, so what's so different about this set? Well, for the audio, nothing really, but the DVD is where the set is unique.

The AUDIO portion of the album is nothing new if you have experienced Jimi before. This album is a debut album, and in my personal opinion, my favorite. It features songs like "Purple Haze," "Foxey Lady," "Fire," "Red House" and other hits. The album package states newly remastered, and it is, but compared Greatest Hits albums or the last remastered album, there is nothing different. Saying that, it's a good thing! The audio portion is great! It has a clean feel, but still holds the old school Jimi of the 60's. When you pop the CD into your player and listen to Purple Haze again, it'll make you go back in time and you'll be groovin' again. Despite the lack of difference, it's actually great that the mixers didn't add anything new. Some of the remasters the music industry brings out now are nothing compared. So the audio portion is amazing. In my opinion, I don't think you can get much better with the audio than this without destroying the true sound of Jimi (sure, there are arguments). The audio portion is what makes this album great and is a definate listen.

And now the DVD:

For those who haven't watched the DVD yet, I would have to say, for Jimi fans, it's definately cool. It's not cheesy or anything, it's from my view, a good documentary to Jimi. It's not the best, but honestly, for $10, you're getting something. I don't know if many of you have seen it, but there's a documentary of Nirvana (on their Nevermind album) that's very similiar to this.

For this DVD, they obviously don't have Jimi in the interviewing chair. Instead, they took on a more modern approach and interviewed people such as Eddie Kramer, Chas Chandler, Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding (which is really cool). Being 2010, they take you back in what it was like recording with Jimi and the experienced they had making the album and playing the songs. I haven't watched the Axis or Ladyland Documentaries yet, but I have to assume they're the same as the Experienced Doc.

During the near 17 minute film, Eddie Kramer (and the rest of the gang) will take you through songs like Purple Haze, May this be Love, The Wind Cries Mary and Are You Experienced. During these songs, different photos and vintage footage is shown of Jimi, Mitch and Noel throughout their Experienced career. A couple of shots shown Jimi playing guitar live, Mitch playing drums, Noel playing base, etc. These are more like flashback vintage footage. Oddly enough, there were little to no shots of Jimi in studio. Oddly enough, again, the footage that I mention, is very little. Actually, the documentary is mainly shows Kramer and his mixing with Jimi and how some of the songs were differently mixed. The rest of the interviewers talk about the songs mentioned above. For me, I would have wanted more, even if that meant adding a couple of live footage of Jimi playing his songs live. Instead it's interviewers talking about Jimi's songs. Which is cool and informative, but isn't exactly what Jimi fans want (for some at least).

The packaging is what you expect from a deluxe set. It's in a digipak packaging and it comes with the CD, the DVD and a 35 page booklet, featuring notes and song lyrics during the making of this album. It also features photographs of Jimi and the gang (though, mainly Jimi of course) and features photos of posters and little things like that. It's definately cool to check out. The albums, especially Ladyland, also feature the original cover-art and concepts for the albums.

So in all, I think this is a worthy re-issue of one of Jimi's greatest albums. I think the DVD is cool, but not spectacular, then again, for $10, what are you expecting? If you buy all the remastered albums, then you're really getting approx 80 - 100 minutes worth. Plus, you're getting the music with it. For Jimi fans, and those who own the previous remastered sets, you're basically spending $10 for the DVD and the booklet (which is cool in itself, I'll add), and I would still say that it's still a worthy investment for the price. But for those who don't own these albums, then this is the collection to get. The audio is great, the DVD is a good watch and the packaging is great! RIP Jimi!
