Free Music Notes for Experience Hendrix: The Best Of Jimi Hendrix

Free Music Review: Yes, Hendrix was a great guitarist!!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I am writing really in response to a current review by bix lang "pastafagiole". His statements are not so much a critique of Jimi's music, but more of an indictment of an entire generation which he feels was more interested in drugs, sex, and rock and roll than education, social changes or "good" music for that matter. However, from his comments it appears that he is also not very happy with the the social changes of the 60s, such as civil rights, protesting against violence/war, and also protesting against a governement which history now confirms as one of the most corrupt in modern times. It is also obvious by his "review" that he is not a great fan of Jimi's or of any one else who a part of the "morally bankrupt" 60s. This is what he says about Jimi: "he was a product of the drug infested, dumbed down culture of the civil rights era of the late 60s". Apparently, mr. bix lang feels that the civil rights movement was not needed and did not result in some much needed changes in our country and in the treatment of minorities. The guitarists which he identifies were also very great guitarists, and you don't have to be a fan of classical or jazz guitar to believe that. But I guess I am a product of that "drug infested and dumbed down culture", because I prefer Jimi. To me, Jimi and his music are the perfect example of the freedom and strength which personifies the 60s. Let's face it, you could not be dumb or weak to bring about the sort of changes which occured in the 60s. Jimi was simply the greatest guitarist ever. He had imagination, a great ear, and an enthusiasm and love for music and sound. He may not have been the best guitarist technically, but no one could emote like Jimi. But he was so much more than just a guitarist. He is often underated as a musician. He wrote some great songs, many of which are instantly recognizable and he was a fantastic live performer. As for Jimi being an alcoholic and drug addict, who truly knows exactly how much he drank or how many drugs he used. Also as for how he died, yes it is unfortunate that Jimi died such an ignoble death, but there it is. But I don't believe that his death should in any way overshadow the great music he left us. It is unfortunate that there is not more.

From mr bix lang's comments it appears that my generation disrespected everything his generation stood for and accomplished. Not so. But time marches on and society changes. He does not like our music or our world, perhaps in the same way my generation criticizes the next generation and their taste in clothes, music, etc.

mr bix lang, I am not a drug addict or sexually promiscuous. I have a college education and hold a responsible position. I pay my bills and my taxes. Yet how can that be possible, being a product of the 60s. It just shows you than an entire generation cannot be indicted simply because you don't like our politics or music.

In closing, if you love Jimi, buy this CD and every other Hendrix CD you can find. Don't listen to mr bix lang, because he is clueless and deaf when it comes to Jimi and his music. As Jimi would probably say, peace brother!!

Free Music Review: Quite possibly the best 'Single CD' Compilation for Jimi....
Hit: 5 Stars

For an artist that only made a handful of (admittedly remarkable) albums, there are a lot of albums that seemingly bear his name. From the 'Family Authorised albums/box-sets, through to bootleg, barely audible cash-in's, hoping to snag an unsuspecting listener. It can be a little bit of a 'Mine-Field' trying to buy a good Hendrix Compilation.

If (like me), you want a nice tidy summary of his best work, without having to run out and pick up individual albums (which in theory, we really should do), then you'd be seriously hard pressed to find a better Single-CD Jimi Hendrix compilation than this.

Unsurprisingly, It collects the majority of his better known Hard-Rock, Psychedelic Rock tracks: (Fire, Crosstown traffic, Purple Haze) with their swaggering, energetic & cathartic guitar excesses that made his music such a unique prospect, but also handpicks tracks from his best studio albums "Electric Ladyland" ("All along the Watchtower", "Voodoo Child (slight return)", "Crosstown Traffic"), and possibly his most regarded album "Are you experienced?" ("The wind cries Mary"," Manic Depression","Red House"). along with various other lesser-known, but no less worthy tracks ("Bold as love", "Dolly Dagger", "Castles made of sand").

Something else that should be mentioned, is the layout of the track listing, which (along with the sound quality) is marvellous, and instead of lining up all the hits at the beginning of the album. The compliers have wisely spaced the hits out, over the course of the album, interspersing the hits amongst the immediately less familiar work, which makes for a far more evened listening experience.

But this wouldn't be a balanced review without some criticism....so, it's necessary to bemoan the fact that this compilation only has 20 tracks!!??? (coooome on!!, a lot more could have been added to this compilation!??, although the last couple of tracks are taken from the 'First Rays of the New Rising Sun' album, that wasn't completed before his death). And there are a couple of tracks whose exclusion is baffling. Why no.... "Are you Experienced?", "Voodoo Chile", 1983...(A Merman I should turn to be), "Manic Depression"???

For serious Jimi Hendrix Fans, there's nothing here that, you won't have heard or seen 'repackaged 100 times before. But then again, this compilation wasn't devised with you in mind. This was designed for those of us, that like/love Mr Hendrix, and never got around to buying an album, and on that basis, it's a complete triumph, and will delight anyone that just wants all the hits in one tidy place. Although saying that.....listening to this has now made me want to go and buy: "Electric Ladyland" & "Are you experienced?", so beware!!!

Free Music Review: The Ultimate Casual Fan Pick-Up
Hit: 5 Stars

Well, there shouldn't be any complaining about this compilation, filled with each of the hits that Hendrix released as well as fan favourites moving along in a type of chronological order nicely. They haven't left out any key selections, placing the absolute essential in here(i.e. purple haze, foxy lady, all along the watchtower), while also including some sensational yet lesser known tracks like Dolly Dagger and Ezy Rider. A very good place to start if you're new to Hendrix, covering each of his studio albums with well selected, incredible songs.

We begin with all the best hits from his debut, Fire is an awesome rocker and along with this comes the ugly rocker Manic Depression, the energetic Stone Free and the amazing track Hey Joe. The Wind Cries Mary is also a classic track to hear, and I'm sure many people aren't familiar with it. Red House gives the must needed bluesy flavour to the compilation, easily his biggest blues hit. The 2nd Hendrix album Axis: Bold As Love is covered quite nicely with the incredible self-titled track which features one of the most amazing Hendrix solos of his career, and also has the great classics If 6 Was 9, Castles Made Of Sand and Little Wing. However I think they made a crucial ommission by leaving out Spanish Castle Magic, a live standard for Jimmy and all around awesome rocker. Electric Ladyland could have been looked at more thoroughly, however they cover the obvious essentials such as Voodoo Child(Slight Return) and All Along The Watchtower. Crosstown Traffic is a great song, however Burning Of The Midnight Lamp could've been here seeing as it was released as a single. Plenty of music is covered on The First Rays Of The New Rising Sun album which is a great addition featuring wonderful tracks like Angel and Freedom. I would've preferred to see In From The Storm on this track listing though. Nevertheless well done by the Experience Hendrix family with choices.

Overall, this "best of" compilation is highly recommended to anyone looking to get into Hendrix, offering some of the greatest rock songs ever composed featuring blistering guitar riffs and solos that all fans of rock n' roll should be able to enjoy.

Free Music Review: JIMI IS GOD
Hit: 5 Stars

Jimi was, is, and will always be the best...His music has influenced a lot of people, including me...I started playing guitar because of Jimi...But I, and all others who started playing guitar, will never be like Jimi...He was just a genious...No one, including Beck and Clapton, could create unbelievable improvisations like Hendrix..He could come up with unbelievable melodies in a tenth of a second...Everything he wanted to do with the guitar, he did...It is very sad that he died at age 27...And he has been dead longer than he lived...But he left us his great music...And his best songs are on EXPERIENCE HENDRIX: The Best Of Jimi Hendrix...Songs like "Purple Haze", "All Along The Watchtower", Voodoo Child (slight return") will always be popular...But there were some other songs on this CD that weren't great hits but still were great songs..."Night Bird Flying", "Freedom", "Angel", show Hendrix's ability to write great ballads and great funk/blues songs...Of course..This CD deserves 5 stars...but some songs are missing that should have been there..."Hey Baby(New Rising Sun"), which is one of Hendrix's best 5 songs, "Pali Gap" are as good as the ones that are on EXPERIENCE HENDRIX....But one song should have been definetely there...and that song is "Machine Gun"..i know that there was never a studio version of that song...But the version from the "Band of Gypsys" album is just breathtaking...and to me "Machine Gun" is Hendrix's masterpiece...and it should have been included on this Best Of CD...but overall..this is a great Album for people who are not very familiar with Hendrix...but after you buy this Best Of..you should buy "Are you Experienced?", "Axis: Bold As Love", and of course Jimi's masterpiece album, "Electric Ladyland"...But there are some other Hendrix Albums that could show you how great Jimi was...The Box Set, "First Rays of the New Rising Sun", "South Saturn Delta" are great too...and one more time..BUY THIS!!!!

Free Music Review: Jimi Hendrix: A man whose spirit and music is immortal.
Hit: 5 Stars

I don't know why I didn't review this album a long time ago. Jimi Hendrix is one of the greatest artists in rock music, and the greatest guitarist of all time. He wasn't the fastest, but his music revolutionized so much music, and in the small amount of time he was around, as well. "Experience Hendrix: The Best of Jimi Hendrix" is an essential piece of rock and roll. It's very accessable, literally in every store I've been in, and it only goes for ten dollars.
On this 20-song compilation, you get such popular tracks as "Purple Haze", "Fire", and Jimi's highest-charter, the timeless, Bob Dylan cover "All Along The Watchtower". Of course, Jimi was influenced by a variety of music, as he shows in the incredible blues stylings of "Red House" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return"). You have such trippy songs as the soul-influenced "Crosstown Traffic", a personal favorite, the somewhat-dirty and ever-groovy "Foxey Lady", the brilliant masterpiece, "If 6 Was 9" and the "it's-so-trippy-I-don't-know-what-to-say" work of art that is "Bold As Love". Then there's the eternal beauty of "Little Wing", the funky, post-humous, "Dolly Dagger" and his immortal genius of the Woodstock recording of "Star Spangled Banner". Of course, there are more than that, but this just goes to show what a musician Jimi Hendrix was!
All in all, an excellent collection that should belong in every classic rock fan's library. After this, you might wanna check out "Band of Gypsys", as it shows Jimi's stunning live work. Although artists like Jimi Hendrix, Cream and Led Zeppelin may stir controversy, I always believe that it's what you personally think of the music. And I, for one, believe Jimi Hendrix's music is timeless, awesome and extremely influential. Hope you all love this one, peace!
