Free Music Notes for A1aFree Music Review: Parrothead and Proud of It Hit: 5 Stars
If Parrothead means you are a JB fan, well then sign me up, because I must say that I've enjoyed his records over the years, somedays playing them non-stop when I lived on a sailboat in the Caribbean. Yeah, I know, lived on a boat, so he has to like Buffett, that's what you're thinking. And in a way, you're right. Jimmy Buffett has sort of become the balladeer of cruising sailors. We listen to his songs, talk about his stories, sometimes argue about them, always enjoy them.
This record has "Pirate Looks at Forty" on it and it defines what most cruising sailors feel about the sea. We have all heard Mother Ocean's call, we're all Fate's victims. And we all want to fill our tin cup with good red wine. We remember what life was like when we were young, wish it could be like that again, like a tire swing, and we all worry about the hurricane season we can't reason with.
Yeah, I'm a Parrothead and proud of it and this record is one of the reasons why.
Free Music Review: Classic Buffett- not for "Parrotheads" Hit: 5 Stars
I am only 20 years old and am a huge Jimmy Buffett fan, however, I would and never will call myself a "Parrot head." Although I am young, I know what Buffett's best music is, and this is it. This is the first Buffett cd I ever owned, given to me by my parents. When I hear songs from this album it makes me think of a story my dad tells me all the time. He was a waiter at a restaurant in St. Simons Island, GA, and his friend told him he had to get off one night to go up to Savannah, GA and see this guy named Jimmy Buffett. Anyway, my dad made it up there, and said there weren't but 10 people there, and buffett got down from stage and passed a J around with everyone that was there. This is true Jimmy Buffett music, and is not for people who call themselves "parrotheads." This is the best Buffett Album to start off with, with the exception of you had to be there an "A white sport coat...". Buy it, you won't regret it.
Free Music Review: You'll Feel the Sea Breeze with this Album Hit: 5 Stars
This album is a singer/songwriter masterpiece from the 70's, standing right up there with the greats from that era.
Like a few other reviewers of this album, I'm not a parrothead. But this album would be one of my desert island picks. It's so lyrical and personal, and conveys eloquently a sense of place: the place being (somewhat nostalgically) Florida in the 70s. There's freedom, warmth and a totally open enjoyment of the sea and the beach.
I, like many others, have very warm memories of being around 20, driving, with this tape in the car. The best times were actually on coastal road trips. Most of the time listening was just remembering those trips. When I hear this album, I can still remember them. There are very few albums out there that are as evocative of a time and a place as this album.
Enjoy!
Free Music Review: Buffett's Best LP? Hit: 5 Stars
Jimmy's best LP? I only include the question mark because I've not heard a number of his later LPs. However, this is far and away his best LP in my book. To me, Jimmy Buffett's work deteriorated greatly from "Changes in Latitude" onward and I eventually had to tune him out his constantly making a parody of himself. A1A is a much more grounded, visceral work than what followed with the onset of the "Parrothead" phenomenon - which I detest to this day - and I don't think he ever had a better backing band than found here.
"A1A" and "Living and Dyin'". These two are the apex of Jimmy's career as far as I am concerned. Really great stuff. Too bad it has been so long since they were released. I'm somewhat prejudiced by living on a sailboat down in the Keys back in the day and this LP has a special place in my heart for that reason.
Free Music Review: "Grassroots" Buffett Hit: 5 Stars
This album is a "soul connection" for me. I became a Buffett fan at the age of 15, when this album was first released and it is still my favorite to this day. These songs are from the pre-parrothead days, when Jimmy was trying to find his place in the music business. With some soulful influence from some of the Nashville and Austin "underground" songwriters, he established his own category with this one. I've been following his music ever since - sometimes disappointed, but always loyal. Change and progress are inevitable in music, technology, and business, but there are times when we need to escape the stress and pressure that such change and progress produces. This album helps me do that from time to time. I never go on vacation without it! Every song on this album is a treasure!
