Free Music Review: Ain't no Parrothead

I've been listening to Jimmy since the mid-70's, seen him in concert several times and I ain't no parrothead. By my reckoning he hasn't released a decent album since Coconut Telegraph, although I do like his remake of Browneyed Girl. The second side of A1A (I wore out a couple of vinyl albums playing this side back in the day when music came on large black "CDs") is my favorite side of all JB albums. This album hardly left my tape player back in college. Migration and Trying to Reason with Hurrican Season are my favs.
It was quite late in my life before I too had been "west of New Orleans or east of Pensacola" (I'm from Alabama and now live in China)and I'll always be a Jimmy fan, even if his lawyers sued a little ol' bar in the Philippines for using the name "Margaritaville".

I was fortunate to have an older brother who turned me on to this music before I knew what it was, or wasn't. Most of my friends didn't have such a luxury and believe Jimmy Buffett is about cheeseburgers and volcanos and shark fins and tequila. The previous list not being a bad combo, but I wish those friends could have seen the unspoiled terrain that I was able to experience. Albums like this will always be near and dear to me. I love all of Jimmy's early stuff...and I say early meaning basically anything before he became a commodity and/or comfortable. In my view that resides somewhere around Floridays. To some/most part it's Jimmy's fault that he's viewed the way he is to non-parrotheads, but I truly cherish his music most when he was on the lower half of the ladder.Free Music Review: Jimmy's Very Best

A1A gives us Jimmy Buffett at his very best as a songwriter, country singer, and philosopher. As many of Buffett's most loyal fans agree, his earliest work is his best work. A1A to many is the Holy Dogma of Buffett albums. A1A gives us Jimmy Buffett the philosopher. Every track is golden and worth a very careful listen, but some highlights are Tin Cup Chalice and Migration. Bits of wisdom can be found everywhere, these songs show Jimmy is an expert in life and living. This album may not be for the fledgling Parrothead who loves the upbeat neo-Caribbean Jimmy Buffett song like Margaritaville and Volcano. This album is for the reflective philosopher that can sit back, listen to a thought-filled country tune, sip a Corona, and understand leisure.Free Music Review: Ride The Buffett Highway

A-1-A is probably Jimmy Buffett's most reflective album. Songs like "Making Music For Money", "Life Is Just A Tire Swing", "Tryin' To Reason With Hurricane Season", "Tin Cup Chalice", "Stories We Could Tell" and "A Pirate Looks At 40" all find Mr. Buffett contemplating life situations. "A Pirate Looks At 40" finds a man getting older lamenting about how he just wasn't made for these times. "Nautical Wheelers" is a tribute to sailor bar songs sung in 3/4 time. Not everything on the album is serious. "Door Number 3" has that classic Jimmy Buffett wit and humor. A-1-A ranks right up near the top of the Jimmy Buffett catalog, a truly great album.Free Music Review: His best album

I got my first copy of this album at an all night gas station/truck stop in god awful nowhere Arkansas. Since then, I can't stop listening to it. Jimmy Buffett's singing and songwriting are awesome, if understated. Before shifting completely into his Parrothead stage, Jimmy Buffett was a blend of the beach, 70's rock and country twang. It's exactly what you will find here. The songs have a relaxed storyteller theme, with plenty of emotion and just enough nostalgia mixed in. Arguably, only "Come Monday" and the ballad to his father on "Banana Winds" have upheld that tradition. I love all of Jimmy Buffett, but this has got to be his best stuff.
