Free Music Review: One more, comin right up...
Hit: 4 Stars

Picking up a new Jimmy Buffett album is like going to a favorite restaurant or hitting a nice vacation spot. Though the quality may vary, you're pretty sure what to expect. And when you find a good one it's something you remember and return to for a while. This time Jimmy and friends also decided to turn to some of their favorite authors for inspiration; in among the usual sun-and-surf lines there are shades of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Mark Twain and Carl Hiaasen among others.

Musically Barometer Soup won't be a huge surprise to.. well, anyone. You've heard this stuff before. Steel drums, tropical melodies, motifs that conjure pictures of beaches, boats and fruity drinks with those annoyingly cute little umbrellas in them. Read any of the other Buffett reviews on the site and you'll see all the same things. So then, no big changes.. and of course there are some silly moments. The seven-deadly-sins bridge in "Bank of Bad Habits." The chorus of "Don-Chu Know." "Jimmy Dreams" can't help seeming a little self-indulgent, but it can be charming in its own way. Ah, but there are some great highlights as well: the wistful "Barefoot Children," the singalong title track, and especially the kicking cover of "Mexico" (check the reworked intro, which is simply marvelous). It's these moments that raise this album a little above the level of, say, Fruitcakes. For a consistently strong album you can try one of the live releases (if you don't mind still more versons of "Volcano" and "Margaritaville.") Among Jimmy's 'regular' albums, close to 40 strong by now, there are a few that stand out from the others: Changes in Latitudes, One Particular Harbour.. and make sure not to miss Barometer Soup.

Free Music Review: Almost 5 Star
Hit: 4 Stars

This is more like it. To me "Soup" is a much better album than "Fruitcakes" and I rate it right up with his classic albums. Almost every song here is a winner. The album starts with the title track "Barometer Soup" which is one of those songs that you hear it once and you can't get it out of your head. If radio would have given this a chance I think it could have been a hit. Other highlights include "Barefoot Children", "Bank Of Bad Habits", "Remittance Man", "Lage Nom Ai", "The Ballad Of Skip Wiley" and "The Night I Painted The Sky". The album closer is a spirited high energy cover of James Taylor's "Mexico". Buffett has a talent for picking good cover songs and this one is perfect for Buffett to tackle. On the down side Buffett includes some silliness that has plagued many of his 90's era albums. Songs like "Don't Chu-Know" are meant to be light hearted fun, but seem more like album filler to my ears. Overall "Barometer Soup" is one of Buffett's best 90's era albums and a big improvement over "Fruitcakes" in my opinion.

Free Music Review: 2nd best CD of 90's
Hit: 4 Stars

Behind "Fruitcakes", this is his best work of the 90's. Recorded in Key West. You can feel the energy of the keys in this recording. GREAT album. Fast and slow songs alike are awesome. Very well recorded sonically, and great song choices. A must have for all Buffett fans. "Mexico" is perhaps the best cover he has ever done. GREAT Stuff here, kiddies. Go and buy this today.

Free Music Review: A little too soupy, needs spice
Hit: 3 Stars

In general this cd is a little too slow for me. Infact I would be hard pressed to find an upbeat song on this album. This is a good cd for "mellowing out" but I miss the fun lyrics of some of his past cd's like "Last Mango in Paris" (which happens to be my favorite). This is not a bad album, after all....it is Buffet...and how could you go wrong with Jimmy?

Free Music Review: One of his worst ever
Hit: 1 Stars

Sometime around the mid 1980s I noticed that Rolling Stone stopped writing reviews of Jimmy's releases. This made sense, since he never really did anything new or different (until the 2000's). This one is just more of the same banal/lackluster junk he put out during a 15 year drought.
