Free Music Review: Great album by a very underappreciated artist.... Hit: 5 StarsI'm really surprised (and delighted) by all the positive reviews out there. I remember when this album came out, and the reviews were pretty tepid. Nevertheless, I pressed on, and I made this my first Jimmy Buffett album. I've always really liked it a lot, and I still break it out quite a bit.
I love the title song, one of my all time favorite Buffett songs. I've played it maybe 200 times or so (really), but it never gets old. The Weather is Here, Wish You Were Beautiful is another hilarious, charming song, and I adore the cover of Little Miss Magic. It's tender and quite moving. It reminds me a lot of Come Monday, one of Jimmy's most beautiful ballads.
Jimmy Buffett is never really taken seriously as a great songwriter/artist. Most of his hits were written by him (including his signature song Margaritaville), and there's an incredible craftsmanship to all his material. He's a real American original, incorporating blues, calypso, country, and folk in his repetroire. And his concerts are a blast. I've seen him twice (the 2nd one was dampened by rain), but he was still great. The first concert was one of the most enjoyable I've ever been to. There's a reason he's still around touring. It's not just nostalgia for people, it's seeing a really great musician doing something he excels at.
Coconut Telegraph is one of his better albums, a bit obscure to start with for the non initiated, but a good start nevertheless.
Free Music Review: This is what you think of, when you think of Jimmy Buffet... Hit: 5 StarsThe full-fledged "beach music" album, not the pretentious early folk, or the dull middle folk; it's the popular Jimmy Buffett, the sound that made him a star.
Free Music Review: Excellent Follow-up and Departure Hit: 5 StarsCoconut Telegraph has a much more personal feel than other albums of his during this time period. He sings about his daughter growing up, John Wayne's passing and many trials he and people close him had to contend with. It is a more mature album and is more introspective and contemplative. And this is an excellent side of Jimmy. There are more ballads and the lyrics seem more personal to him. However, he never loses site of the 'Buffett' personality so even in the most contemplative moment, he can interject humor and good time. This is an excellent album and one of my favorites.
