Free Music Notes for Don't Stop The Carnival [ENHANCED CD]Free Music Review: Something a bit different Hit: 5 Stars
Whether you're a Jimmy fan, a Wouk fan, a Caribbean fan, or a fan of musicals in general you'll find MUCH to like here. Myself, a long time Buffett fan, picked it up for just that reason. Initially, I was struck by the contrast that this offering contained in relation to the 'Bubba I was so very used to. Mere minutes into its virgin spin in my CD player, however, I found myself in love all over again, transported wholeheartedly to Kinja, getting to know the prismatic cast. During its next 100 or so rotations over the insuing 3 or 4 days, I nearly forgot Jimmy ever wrote "Cheeseburger", so captivating was the musical genius at work here. When I finally threw A1A on weeks later, the aforementioned contrast was seemingly even more stark. Two seperate worlds. One hell of a songwriter. Both schools are readily able to be reconciled to each other. One hell of a carnival! Word to the wise: I would recommend reading the book first and seeing the musical itself first, if possible. This will serve to orient you to the engrossing story and to further show a major talent at work -- flawlessly adapting the book into musical form.
Free Music Review: "Island Fever" all over again - with a twist and story! Hit: 5 Stars
I hadn't really thought about Jimmy Buffett all that much in the last few years. I grew up with him - from his Montana to Key West sounds - and it always felt like coming home to a well-worn easy chair to listen to his music (sorry, Jimmy, that's meant to be a good thing.) I loved his concerts throughtout the years - best one at Red Rocks in maybe about 1985 or 1986. Having just returned from a first-ever trip to Key West where I visited Margaritaville Cafe, I had Jimmy on my mind. A friend turned me on to "Don't Stop the Carnival" and it is mesmerizing. The musical, written by Buffett, was first seen in Coconut Grove, where it received rave reviews. The story, written by Herman Wouk, is about Norman Paperman, a middle aged public relations exec who leaves it all after a serious heart attack to move to Kinja, the tropical paradise and run the hotel. What transpires when he gets there is funny, intriguing, romantic - a twist of whimsy and real life with great Buffett music and superior vocals from the remainder of the cast. Get it, read the comments about each song by Herman Wouk, and love the Buffett lyrics. Calaloo to you!
Free Music Review: I Don't Like Jimmy Buffett !! But..... Hit: 5 Stars
I loved this CD. I listened to it in a vacation house we rented for a week on an island (OK, so it wasn't Key West or the USVI, it was Nantucket). It's beautiful. I don't know the Wouk book everyone seems to be referring to, but I'm going to have to get it. I loved that the disc tells a single story. I was also surprised that there was a song on it that had another singer (a lady) singing without Jimmy singing - "Sheila Says" - that was my favorite song on the album. Very pretty and gentle melody to the song (the words were a little bitter though). So I just got back from another trip to that house on Nantucket. I was looking for this CD when I arrived. Gone!!! I couldn't remember the name either (not being a Parrothead). What a bummer. I just got back yesterday and went out looking for the album. Thought I got it, but picked up "One Particular Harbor" by mistake - aargh, I don't like it. Finally surfed around and figured out it was this disc....listen to sample tracks. Yup, this is the one. I'm happier now. If you're going to an island, bring this. You won't regret it. I'm buying it for the next time I do.
Free Music Review: Best and most different Buffett Hit: 5 Stars
I have been a Buffett fan for over 25 years. I took my parents to a concert in 1978 in Portland Oregon, and I have taken my son's to no less than 7 Buffett concerts as well. I don't just love everything he does, and like many fans, I am a bit dissillusioned with the feeling he has gotten so comercialized and worships the dollar. But, despite that, I am still a avid fan. I am also a avid reader and I love almost anything written by Herman Wouk. I would have bought this album just because it's Buffett, and I did originally, but it's much deeper than that. This is such a nice change of music for Buffett. I sure wish I could have seen the Broadway play. The concert I saw right after they released this CD was my favorite concert out of something like 15 times. The female vocalists on this CD are stupendous and you don't even miss the fact that they often have bigger roles than Jimmy in the songs. I highly recommend this album to anyone. Buffett fan, or Herman Wouk fan or not a fan at all. You will certainly enjoy as long as you aren't tone deaf. Happy Listening......
Free Music Review: Best Soundtrack Of A Musical I'll Never See Adapted From A Book I'll Never Read Hit: 5 Stars
I fell in love with this quirky soundtrack after hearing snippets of the song "Public Relations" (during of all things a talk radio discussion of public relations!), but I have little desire to see the musical and none at all to read the novel it is based upon. The reason? Primarily it is the awful, downbeat, deus ex machina ending, which shockingly and pointlessly kills off a major character in order to tie up some loose ends. Secondarily, I don't get all that much pleasure out of watching someone's futile struggles against continual disaster no matter how humorously it is written. The brief synopsis in the CD booklet is enough to allow me to understand the hilariously, defiantly upbeat songs without my having to endure either the lengthier tragedy of the musical or the reportedly depression-inducing 400+ pages of Don't Stop the Carnival: A Novel.
My advice? Skip the story, and just enjoy the music.
