Jimmy Buffett made the progression from the music world to the literary world and with Don't Stop The Carnival, he tries made the leap onto the Broadway stage. By adapting Herman Wouk's novel, he makes an ambitious attempt to marry literature and music. While he did stage several performances of the show in Florida, the show unfortunately never made it to the Great White Way. As a way to boost interest in the project, Mr. Buffett recording this album. The music and themes are amongst the most ambitious of his career and he does a fine job of handling the various different roles that make up the show. The album does suffer a bit due to this fact, but overall it is a high quality effort and hopefully Mr. Buffett will make another attempt in this medium.Free Music Review: It's A Great Carnival! If you're a Buffett fan, or even if you just like the concept of "Broadway goes calypso", you'll enjoy this unique collection of songs written by Jimmy for his musical collaboration with Herman Wouk.
The CD faithfully follows the story, written by Wouk in his book of the same name. So, you will get even more enjoyment from the CD if you read the book, and then listen to the CD, which is what I did. Had to control the urge to rip off the shrink-wrap until I had finished reading the book, but I'm glad I waited. You can visualize the characters and scenes listening to the musical island beat and lyrics. The book's an entertaining read and the CD is fun, so I highly recommend both. Read, Listen, and Ejoy!

Before buying the CD, I read the book by Herman Wouk. The book made me laugh and almost cry(lol). A great story. So Jimmy and Herman get together, yadda, yadda, need a soundtrack for the play. So what does the buyer of this CD get in return for the hard earnest money they pay? Music that reminds you of the characters and events from the book. Music that was made to be performed on stage. This is not movie music, this is stage music. If you haven't read the book, don't buy the CD. If you have read the book, this is great music for relaxing, studying, and reading. This is a great album for all phans. I admit I didn't know anything about the "carnival" before I purchased the album, but after a few times in the player I loved it. It isn't my favorite but I sure do enjoy it. JIMMY DON'T EVER STOP THE CARNIVAL!!!!!!!!

Great music all around, and a cool adaptation of Wouk's book. I saw "Don't Stop The Carnival" at the Coconut Grove Playhouse, and was almost transported to the land of Kinja. Sign me up for the next boat out, give me a cocktail and put up on the hill!
