This is an excellent EP. However, as some mentioned, it is definitely an extension of the darker themes and more complex melodies from their "Futures" album. The songwriting here is a step past "Bleed American," and there are no cheery pop anthems, just a few complex rock ballads ("rock ballads" sounds lame, but there's no better way to describe it).
If nothing else, download the track, "Disintegration." It is absolutely gorgeous. One reviewer described it as "lush" and "epic," and I absolutely agree. It starts slow, and builds to an amazing crescendoed chorus near the halfway point. It's like something off "Clarity," but "grown-up." "Disintegration" was enough for me to justify owning the album, although the other songs are also great (except for the somewhat overmixed "Drugs or Me").
I was lucky enough to see their "anti-stadium," (e.g., ballads) tour in 2007, and "Disintegration" was just as stunning and intense then as it was on the album, and I learned that if I was ever going to listen to this song, to do it with the bass up, so that Zach's drumming makes an impact. Try it out, it's well worth the $0.99... because the Amazon "sample" doesn't do this song justice. And then make sure that you persevere until the end.
