Free Music Notes for No Quarter: Jimmy Page & Robert Plant UnleddedFree Music Review: No Thank You Hit: 5 Stars
The remastering job is fabulous. Even in a so-so car stereo, you can hear the clarity. Especially in the song, "No Quarter". Maybe in the original "No Quarter" CD, there is some mystique in it's muddiness. The new song seems almost identical to City Don't Cry, and City don't cry was shortened. The 2 together sounds like the original City Don't Cry. To me, nothing really gained. What was stark to me, was the absence of "Thank You". I really didn't realize until Nobody's fault... rolled into No Quarter, and I grabbed the CD case saying, "What the.....?!?". Rain Song was delightful. The orchestra, bass player, etc., definately practiced based on the studio album. To the note! Actually sounded almost too accurate to me as Led Zeppelin always adventured from the studio recordings when they played live. It was wonderful but at the same time hauntingly strange. There is enough clean-up, track changes, etc. to make this worth it even if you have the original CD or the partner DVD (also released 10/26/04). I'm in the car too much to have to wait to get into the house. If you are an audiophile, and have a big expensive system, this will make you very happy. Attn: Stereo stores, use this as a demo CD for speaker systems! Like Jim in Seal Beach, I would have opted for Thank You in lieu of the Moroccan stuff. I'm not saying I'm bent on Zep stuff. I think Plant solo does the Eastern stuff quite well, better than this. For example, "Life begins again" on Disk2, track 17, of Sixty-Six-to Timbuktu is a lifetime masterpiece for Plant. Just amazing.
Free Music Review: Great music by any measure! Hit: 5 Stars
Like it is for many, Led Zeppelin is the cornerstone of my rock n' roll world. I have many albums from many different decades but the music from the 60's still stands as the best of my collection. Zeppelin started in the 60's and is possibly more influential and played more than anything else from that period, even the Beatles.
If you're like me, you've heard Zeppelin, Zeppelin, Zeppelin your whole life and practically have their whole catalogue memorized. So it's great when a newer release comes along that offers new variations/interpretations of old favorites. This CD is most worthy. The new songs are great too. "The Truth Explodes" has simple yet extremely bad a** guitar lines from Page. Robert Plant's voice amazingly still sounds great here, although he has the assistance of additional vocalists to help him with the higher notes.
Note: no one should hold it against Page and Plant for not inviting original bassist J.P. Jones along for the ride. That would've been too close of an attempt to reunite Led Zeppelin, something that Robert Plant in particular never wanted to attempt. As it stands, this is a worthy nostalgia trip and a joyous reunion of the key Zeppelin songwriters.
Additional Note: as a Cure fan, I love pointing out to my Cure-detracting friends that the very talented former Cure member Porl Thompson plays guitar and banjo in this set. I also read that Porl had to help Jimmy relearn some of his old songs when they first got together to rehearse!
Free Music Review: The ultimate reunion Hit: 5 Stars
This CD/DVD is a must for any Zeppelin fan new and old. Yes, the songs are very different, but if you saw this band live, you would know they tweak their songs at every performance. 'Nobody's Fault...' had the same passion as the electric version, and with the hurdy-gurdy and Porl Thompsom's banjo playing, the somg has a strong Celtic feel to it. 'No Quarter' was breathtaking....period. I do miss 'Thank You' and What Is...' on the CD, and that is my only major complaint. Off to Morocco for 'Yallah' (or The Truth Explodes), Wah Wah and City Dont Cry. The local musicians were perfect pieces for Jimmy and Robert and it gave me a new love for Moroccan music. Gallows Pole, Four Sticks, Friends blew me away. The re-worked Battle Of Evermore, back to a true duet drew a tear from my eye it was so beautifully done. 'Since I Been Loving You' is still the show stopper it was 30 some years ago. 'The Rain Song (DVD) was as dramatic and gorgeous just like Houses Of The Holy. Then the tear-jerker ballad Wonderful One. The song with a drum program and Jimmy's acoustic doubleneck, was all it needed. Robert's vocal was beautiful, smooth, and very emotional. After hearing it for the first time, and to this day, the eyes just begin gushing. 'Kashmir' a great closer, more of a Middle Eastern vibe than Indian but still the rocker that will never die. Buy this piece of history!!!
Free Music Review: So Good I forgot it was live Hit: 5 Stars
How good is this album? I didn't know it was live for 12 years. Byte O' history: I saw Zepp for the first time from front row seats December 30, 1968, when they were an un-advertised opening act. Perhaps their 3rd or 4th ever performance in the USA.
In 1995, I caught the Page & Plant tour twice through a happy accident of travel. Stunning performances. I bought the CD and the DVD and listened often.
Back to the opening point. Page & Plant and the band and the orchestra were ON, in both of the 1995 performances I saw, and clearly very much so in the live performance that begat this CD. So much so, that it sounded and felt like a studio production. Today, when looking up something on Wikipedia, I saw the word "LIVE" as adjective to this CD. Naw... so I listened again and... woah. There IS applause in there. It's that good. Ten stars.
Free Music Review: EXTRAORDINARILY RICH, Massive Range, OUTSTANDING! 10 Stars! Hit: 5 Stars
I listen to this CD in my car, and I own the DVD. The music on this CD is OUTSTANDING - if you like classic rock, mixed with a rich diverse range of musical elements, an incredible orchestra, combined with Jimmy Page's pinnacle talent, and Robert Plant's one-of-a-kind voice.
This CD is *not* the Led Zeppelin of the past, it's a rare blend of music, specifically delivering Middle Eastern mystique intricately interwoven with "KASHMIR" bringing an OUTSTANDING musical experience.
That's what this CD is - an experience, and one that I TREASURE! 10 Stars!
