Free Music Review: Overlooked Solo Album From Jimmy Page

Page put out this nine-song collection in 1988 with many different musicians involved. It was recorded at The Sol, England in early 1987.
The material may not be as memorable as his work with Led Zeppelin but this set of tunes delivers! Bonham's son Jason played the drums on all tracks except for tracks #3 and 5 which feature Barriemore Barlow. The recording was engineered and mixed by Leif Mases who had worked with Zeppelin during the "In Through The Out Door" sessions.

There are three instrumentals featured: "Writes of Winter", "Liquid Mercury", and "Emerald Eyes". All three of them are very entertaining and filled with interesting guitar work. The third title I mentioned has a solo in the middle with an "In Thorugh The Out Door" atmosphere to it. In the other two you'll hear some good slide guitar.
The first two songs "Wasting My Time" and "Wanna Make Love" feature John Miles on vocals. His singing style is similar to AC/DC's Brian Johnson or Krokus' Marc Storace but the voice is less raspy. "The Only One" has Robert Plant on the mic but surprisingly I found it to be the album's weakest cut by far! Hmmm...that slide guitar overdub in the pre-chorus sounds weird and seems to be a little out of tune, still far from something unlistenable. Now that leaves us with three more compositions that feature singer Chirs Farlowe which some people might remember from his work with the 70's progressive band Atomic Rooster or the blues/jazz band Colosseum. His voice isn't as strong as it used to be but he did a fine job. The first one is "Hummingbird", easily the best of the three! It's a haunting composition with an incredibly melodic solo form Page although it was written by a guy named Russell. In the Page/Farlowe written "Prison Blues" Page get's to flex his fingers much more than on any other song here delivering some serious blues licks for seven minutes. The closing number "Blues Anthem" (Page/Farlowe) is a melodic acoustic number with another memorable solo from Page while his guitar synth work sounds like a keyboard. Good ending!

This offering from Page, like I said, is not as strong as his work with Led Zeppelin but it is still a worthwhile addition to your collection! Just don't expect the songs to approach the magnitude of Zeppelin tunes such as "Kashmir", "Carouselambra", "Achilles Last Stand", "In The Light", "The Rain Song", or "Stairway To Heaven"!
