Free Music Notes for Dark Chords on a Big Guitar Album

Free Music Review: Dark, murky.....and beautiful.
Hit: 5 Stars

As with her last album (1997's GONE FROM DANGER), Baez has chosen ten songs by a group of current and very hip songwriters (most of whom weren't even born when she released her first album), but this time around, she opts for a harder-edged, murky, atmospheric, almost rockish sound, reminiscent more of Emmylou Harris' WRECKING BALL than of Baez' own mid- to late-90s work. Like WRECKING BALL, this CD has a dark, introspective feel that seems to resonate more with each successive listening. There is so much going on that it's worth giving several listens, as much will escape the listener on the first couple of times.

The sound may be a bit jarring to those expecting Baez' more acoustic sound, but it is nonetheless one of the most striking and moving albums of her career.

Despite the age difference between the 62-year old Baez and most of the songwriters, she connects with most of these songs even more successfully than she did on GONE FROM DANGER. Her voice, somewhat more textured than during her "achingly pure soprano" days, is still a marvel, and her readings of Ryan Adams' "In My Time of Need", Gregg Brown's "Rexroth's Daughter", and Natalie Merchant's post-apocalyptic "Motherland" are particularly striking.
