Free Music Review: A Sweet and Powerful Sound

First off, for me, the gem of this record is Joanie's version of Bob Dylan's "Tomorrow is a Long Time", which curiously enough was not on the original release. In fact this song would stay buried until Columbia put out a recording of it from his 1963 Town Hall concert on his 1971 record, Greatest Hits, Vol. II. That song alone is reason enough to own the reissue. But back in 1963 this was one of the best records of that year, even without that excellent song.
This record opens with "Once I had a Sweetheart", which was kind of ironic, because Joan Baez was the wannabe sweetheart of a lot of my folk music listening friends. She pulls you into songs old in and new with a voice like no other. A sweet sound, but one filled with power as well. A voice that commands listening to. Over time Joanie would release a lot of very good records, but for me, this is her best.
1963 is the year of the Beatles, but it's also the year music started infiltrating and maybe directing the conscious of the baby boomers and Joanie was leading the charge, doing her best to make us aware of what was wrong and what needed changing and this is exemplified in her recording of Dylan's "With God on Our Side." She is a folk singer, but at her heart she is a protest singer and every song she sings, every folk song and even when she sings the "The Battle Hymm of the Republic" is a protest song. She is the voice in our head that tells us the truth. She is our wannabe sweetheart and we should listen, but sadly, mostly we don't.
